HPU’s Wright and Sanchez Earn Big South Men’s Basketball Postseason Honors

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University men’s basketball’s freshman John-Michael Wright was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team and All-Conference Honorable Mention, as announced by the conference office on Monday (March 2).

Additionally, redshirt sophomore Caden Sanchez was named All-Academic Team.

Wright led High Point with 14.4 points per game and 5.4 rebounds a game. In conference play, Wright also paced the Panthers with 15.2 points a game, while contributing with 5.4 boards per contest. The Fayetteville, N.C. native finished as the Big South Conference’s leading scorer and top rebounder amongst freshman, while holding at least a share of both honors the whole season. Wright started all of HPU’s 31 contests with a team-high 32.5 minutes per game, leading the team in scoring for 15 of them. He scored in double-digits on 23 occasions and had seven games with at least 20 points. He was named Big South Freshman of the Week five times, the most amongst any player this season.

Sanchez, a dual major in physics and philosophy, set career-highs games played (31), starts (30), points per game (7.1) and rebounds per game (4.4). The Columbus, Ohio recorded his first career double-double (Nov. 23) vs Eastern Washington after tallying 15 points and 13 rebounds. He scored a career-high 24 vs Hampton (Feb. 6) and set a career-high in rebounds with 14 at UNC Asheville (Jan. 14).

No. 10-seeded High Point will travel to No. 7 USC Upstate on Tuesday (March 7) in the first round of the Big South Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on ESPN 3.
