They made it: NC3 baseball season drawing to an end
from Mike Duprez with The Dispatch(Lexington, North Carolina)

When the Anerican Legion baseball season was canceled due to COVID-19, local leaders who normally were affiliated with the longstanding program scrambled to put something else together.

It worked.

What they created was known as NC3 American League Baseball and the one-season alternative to American Legion concludes its season Wednesday night when the Lexington-Davidson Warriors play the High Point HiToms at Finch Field.

“We’ve had to jump through hoops and hurdles to be able to play this year,” said Lexington-Davidson athletic director Ric Cook. “It’s been a different kind of year to play baseball. We’ve had some challenges to get on the field and be able to play, Getting on the field was, I think, rewarding for the guys.”

There were some issues with COVID-19, which forced rescheduling of games. But they were nothing like the outbreaks currently being faced by Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball. NC3 teams have mostly avoided that.

“We really have,” Cook said. “There have been a couple of instances where teams had to move games. But there has been a sense of normalcy and I think the guys appreciated that.”

Rowan County was able to play 33 games while Randolph County got in 30 to lead the NC3. There were 11 teams in the league, which closely approximated American Legion Area III.

The decision was made recently to not have playoffs. High Point, whose organization was one of the leaders in creating NC3, has already clinched the league championship.

“I think just from an administrative standpoint, not from the Post 87 HiToms perspective, what we set about accomplishing was to provide young people the opportunity to play baseball,” said Greg Suire, president of the High Point-Thomasville HiToms franchise. “…When we met in April there was a void left with the cancellation of the high school season and subsequent cancellation of the American Legion season.”

There were some hard feelings over late-inning aggressive baserunning in Greensboro’s 17-1 win over Lexington-Davidson on Saturday at Holt-Moffitt Field.++++++++++
