Greensboro’s Ivy Ray Collects Two USA South Softball Weekly Awards

ROME, Ga.—Ivy Ray (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) earned a rare double-dose of weekly awards from the USA South Athletic Conference (USA South) this afternoon. The freshman claimed both Athlete of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors as announced by the USA South earlier today.

Ray proved to be extremely difficult to handle on the base paths Saturday afternoon as the Pride claimed a non-conference doubleheader sweep over USA South member William Peace University. The freshman stole two bases in the top of the second inning of game one after her RBI-single brought Ray aboard the bases. Ray singled again in her next at-bat in the top of the third inning, with two outs, and stole second base. Ray collected her third hit of game one in the top of the fifth inning to lead the team at the plate in game one.

Ray was even more of a menace to the Pacers on the base paths in game two. The outfielder reached on a walk in her first plate appearance of the game and promptly stole second base during the next at-bat. On a Hannah French walk, Ray proceeded to steal third base for her second stolen base of French’s trip to the plate. Ray connected on a no-out double in the top of the fifth inning to drive home her second RBI of the afternoon. She finished the doubleheader five-for-six at the plate with six stolen bases.

The freshman boasts a .556 batting average on the season with four RBI and six stolen bases. Out eligible batters, her batting average stands second in the USA South only to teammate Kassie Simmons. Ray’s six stolen bases places her in a tie for second place in the USA South early in the season.

Ray and the Pride open their 2021 home schedule Thursday, hosting Randolph College for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Greensboro’s Latham Park.
