Deaton(Northeast Guilford HS) Hits Grand Slam, Cox(Southern Alamance HS) Throws 400th-Career Strikeout as Greensboro College Softball Sweeps Ferrum

FERRUM, Va.—Greensboro College’s Jordan Deaton (Gibsonville, N.C./Northeast Guilford) collected six RBI over both games of Wednesday evening’s doubleheader with Ferrum College while Cheyanne Cox (Burlington, N.C./Southern Alamance) tossed her 400th-career strikeout as the Pride secured a sweep of the Panthers. Greensboro took game one 4-3, and won the nightcap, 12-6.

Cox (10-1) fanned eight batters in six innings in the circle for the Pride (16-4) in game one and only faced more than four batters in an inning only once in the contest. When faced with adversity in the sixth inning where Ferrum scored twice, Cox rallied to strike out the final two batters of the inning.

Deaton provided the early run support for Cox in the top of the fourth inning after a Macy Brewer (Colfax, N.C./Northwest Guilford) triple to right-center field. Deaton brought Brewer home on a sacrifice fly to left field as the Pride posted the first run of the game. Olivia Davidson gave Cox more insurance in the top of the sixth inning with a two-out, two-RBI single to right field.

Jenna Endsley came in to pitch the final inning and faced runners at first and second with one out. Endsley induced two fielder’s choice plays at third base to retire the Panthers and secure the game-one win and her first save of the season.

The Pride jumped to a 3-0 lead in game two, powered by a two-run rally in the top of the fourth frame, sparked by Alexis Newman’s (Climax, N.C./Southeast Guilford) double with two outs in the inning.

Ferrum countered with a six-run rally in the next half-inning, capped by a Keri Hamlett two-RBI triple to right-center field, which put the Panthers ahead.

The Pride forced a bases-loaded situation with no outs in the top of the fifth inning in response. After an Alexis Sox hit-by-pitch that drove in the first run of the inning, Deaton connected on a grand slam to center field as the Pride reclaimed the lead. Erica Edwards capped the Pride’s seventh-inning rally with a pinch-hit, two-RBI single to left field as the Pride put the game out of reach.

Kailey Walker (Eden, N.C./Morehead) was the lone Pride batter with multiple hits in game one, batting two-for-four. Sox finished game two three-for-three with a double and two RBI while Caroline Stanley (Reidsville, N.C./Rockingham County) hit three-for-four with a stolen base. Newman hit two-for-four with two doubles and two RBI in game two.

Endsley (2-1) took the game-two win for the Pride in relief of Lauren Engel after three and one-third innings. Cox fanned five batters in three innings of relief where she gave up just two hits.

Erin Nelson (1-4) took the game-two loss for Ferrum in a five-inning effort where she gave up eight runs on nine hits while striking out five batters.

The Pride return to USA South Athletic Conference play Saturday, hosting Pfeiffer University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the City of Greensboro’s Latham Park.
