Alexis Sox Hits Walk-Off Single in Game Two as Greensboro College Pride Softball Sweeps N.C. Wesleyan

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Greensboro College’s Alexis Sox broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the tenth inning of game two of Wednesday afternoon’s non-conference doubleheader with North Carolina Wesleyan College to secure a sweep of the Battling Bishops. The Pride claimed game one, 7-1, while taking game two, 8-7, in ten innings.

The Pride fired three unanswered runs to start the first contest with two runs coming in the bottom of the second with one out on the board. N.C. Wesleyan countered in the top of the third inning with a one-out run. Sox recorded a two-out RBI-single to left field to extend the Pride’s lead in the bottom half of the inning in response to the Battling Bishops. Macy Brewer added a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Pride held on to the lead throughout to claim the game-one win.

N.C. Wesleyan jumped to a 2-0 lead to start the first two and a half innings of game two on a pair of sacrifice flies. The Pride responded in the bottom of the third inning, posting a four-run rally. Hannah French started the rally with no outs on a RBI-single to center field. Ivy Ray’s single brought in a run as an errant throw from center field advanced runners as the Pride capped their four-run rally in the inning.

The Battling Bishops reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth inning with a three-run rally. Two of the runs came with one out as Beth Braswell’s double to right-center field started the rally. Greensboro countered with three singles in the bottom half of the inning to load the bases with no outs to set up French, who drove in the lone run of the inning off a sacrifice fly for the first out of the inning.

Both sides dueled to a stalemate in the seventh inning to force extras. Both sides traded a run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Pride tied the game when Hannah King reached base on an errant throw from the left side of the infield. Game-two starting pitcher helped her own cause in the bottom of the ninth inning with a sacrifice-fly RBI as both sides traded a run each in the inning. Greensboro finally held the Battling Bishops to without a run in the top of the tenth inning, setting up Sox to drive in the game-winning run with one out to complete the sweep.

Simmons finished with three RBI over the afternoon and claimed the game-two win in the circle in a nine and two-third innings effort where she struck out four batters and walked two. French finished two-for-two with two RBI in game two while also drawing three walks in the first contest. Alexis Newman drove in two runs in game one while Courtney Chriscoe was one of four Pride batters with a multi-hit effort in game two batting two-for-two.

Cheyenne Cox (13-4) the game-one win for the Pride in a five-inning effort where she struck out six batters and walked four. Jenna Endsley finished the contest with two innings of one-hit relief.

The Pride are scheduled to return to action Saturday, hosting Mary Baldwin University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
