Elon Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Virginia Tech

ELON, N.C. — The Elon University women’s lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the 2021 season on April 14 as it came up short by a five-goal margin against Virginia Tech, 10-5.

“I’m incredibly proud of the way our team fought today,” said head coach Josh Hexter. “We showed toughness, grit and positive energy in a game where we didn’t perform at our best. I’m proud of our group for that and I believe that will carry us forward in future games.”

THE RUNDOWN
-The Hokies opened the game with an early 3-0 run. Elon then scored two of the next three goals to cut Virginia Tech’s lead to two (4-2). After three more goals by the Hokies, Mae McGlynn scored the final goal of the half to make the score 7-3.
-Virginia Tech held the Phoenix to two goals in the second half. Those goals in addition to the three for Virginia Tech led to the 10-5 final score and win for the Hokies.

NOTES
-McGlynn continues to lead the Elon offense, posting her third consecutive hat trick in addition to picking up a pair of ground balls and causing two turnovers. Margaret Stephan and Cate Mackel scored the other two Phoenix goals.
-In the draw circle, Campbell Armstrong tallied a team-high three draw controls.
-Quinn Daly led Elon in both ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (4). Her caused turnovers mark a new season high.
-Paulina DiFatta (8-1) finished in the double digits in saves, totaling 10 over the course of the game.
-Elon now stands at 8-1 (2-0 CAA), while Virginia Tech improves to 4-8 (0-6 ACC).
