Austin Abourjilie(Northwest Guilford HS) Tallies Seven Points as Greensboro College Men’s Lacrosse Beats Averett, 17-9

GREENSBORO, N.C.—-Greensboro College’s Austin Abourjilie (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford/William Peace) led the Pride with seven total points as Greensboro claimed a Monday afternoon USA South Athletic Conference (USA South) victory over Averett University, 17-9.

Averett held the Pride (9-2, 5-2 USA South) in check in the first quarter, opening to a 3-0 advantage. However, the Pride would mount a five-goal run to start the second quarter as William Beyer (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) and Davis Miller teamed up to amass the Pride’s goals. Beyer netted two goals in the run while Miller netted three with one on the man-up at the 12:08 mark of the period and back-to-back goals 37 seconds apart beginning at the 9:00 mark.

Abourjilie assisted on the last Beyer goal of the second quarter, but most of Abourjilie’s damage came in the second half. The attacker scored two third-period goals with the first at the 13:29 mark of the period continuing what would eventually become a string of four unanswered goals from the Pride. Abourjilie would assist on Ethan Pierce’s goal with 39 seconds left in the period to spark another five-goal run that spilled into the fourth quarter.

Abourjilie netted three goals in the fourth quarter with the first coming with 13:16 remaining in the fourth quarter and the second at the 10:01 mark to close out the Pride’s five-goal run. Abourjilie scored the game’s final goal with 1:29 remaining in response to Averett’s two-goal burst as the Pride claimed the win.

Abourjilie finished with five goals and two assists while Miller posted four goals, two assists, and six ground balls with a caused turnover. Beyer posted three goals and two assists with three ground balls. Dominic Scali added three goals while Spencer Kontoulas (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford) added three assists with four ground balls. Pierce added a goal and two assists with three ground balls.

Ryan Pomeroy posted six ground balls and caused four turnovers to lead the Pride’s long poles. Justin Matthews (High Point, N.C./Southwest Guilford) caused three turnovers and posted two ground balls.

Liam Taylor led Averett’s attackers with three goals. Connor Taff posted two goals with three ground balls. Michael Kravalis led the Cougars’ long poles with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Christopher Stallings (9-2) took the win for the Pride in an eleven-save effort. Jacob Shriver (4-8) took the loss in net for Averett, stopping 14 shots.

The Pride concludes their regular season Wednesday with a 6 p.m. USA South matchup at Methodist University.
