FARMVILLE, Va.—Greensboro College posted four golfers in the top-ten individuals, including all top-three golfers in the field, as the Pride won the 36-hole, 13-team Hampden-Sydney Invitational at the Manor Golf Club Sunday afternoon.
Zane Smith grabbed the individual crown, finishing with a 36-hole total of four-under-par. The senior carded a one-under-par 71 in his final-round effort. Smith carded three birdies and an eagle on his round with the eagle coming on the par-four, 281-yard 16th hole. Smith was one of four Pride golfers to post a birdie on the par-four, 503-yard second hole and the par-five, 498-yard 18th hole. Smith’s individual victory is the first of the year.
Jerrion Dukes placed second overall as the sophomore competed as an individual apart from the team score. Dukes posted a two-under-par 70 to lift his 36-hole total to one-under-par. Dukes remained bogey-free for most of his round and carded four birdies on the day. The sophomore carded the Pride’s only birdie on the par-four, 362-yard first hole and the par-four, 410-yard eighth hole. The final-round effort ties Dukes’ low round.
Connor Brown posted the Pride’s third score of even-par or better on the day, posting a one-under-par 71 to finish third overall with a 36-hole total of two-over-par. Brown birdied both par-three holes on the back-side of the course and posted birdies on the second and eighth holes. Brown scored one-under-par on the back-nine holes as he posted the Pride’s second-lowest score that was counted towards the team score.
Davis Reynolds posted the third-lowest score counted in the team’s final tally with an even-par 72. Reynolds posted five birdies on his scorecard as he birdied three holes on the back side, including both par-five holes on the final nine. Four of his five total birdies were on all four par-five holes. Reynolds’ final-round effort vaulted him into a tie for seventh place with a 36-hole total of four-over-par.
The Pride finished first with a 36-hole score of 584 after posting a score of 288 in the final round. Greensboro won the tournament by seven strokes over host Hampden-Sydney College and posted an eleven-stroke advantage over third-place Bridgewater College.
The Pride now turn their attention to the USA South Athletic Conference Championship, being played at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C. The 54-hole tournament begins Thursday and lasts through Saturday.
