HiToms Bring Back Key Contributors Cain and McCullough

High Point/Thomasville, NC – The HiToms are pleased to announce the signings of King University’s Avery Cain and Wingate’s Brody McCullough to the 2021 roster. Cain and McCullough were both All-CPL selections in 2020, boosting the HiToms to a Coastal Plain League Mid-Atlantic Division championship.

Fresh off of a 3.13 ERA in the successful 2020 campaign, step one for head coach Scott Davis’ second season is to resign some of the stars that graced the Finch Field pitching mound last season.

A former Post 87 HiTom, Avery Cain comes to the roster from King University in Bristol, TN. A Junior, Cain has spent his last two seasons at King after beginning his career with Winston-Salem State. Through three seasons in college baseball, Cain has struck out 83 batters in 86.2 innings on the hill.

2020 was a breakout year for Cain. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cain tore it up in the spring, finishing 4th in the Conference Carolinas in ERA (2.27), 2nd in wins (4), and 7th in strikeouts (33). After a long pause, Cain continued his dominance in eight appearances for the HiToms. He earned Second Team All-CPL honors with a 1.37 ERA, 3-0 record, and a 19:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Including exhibition games, Cain did not walk a batter in the first eight appearances of the summer season.

Lexington, NC native Brody McCullough one-upped Cain in 2020 with exceptional pitching and a First Team All-CPL honor. The Wingate right-hander worked out of the bullpen for six of his seven appearances to a tiny 0.63 ERA.

At Wingate, McCullough is building a resume as one of the best strikeout artists in Division II baseball. So far in 2021, he has 47 strikeouts in 36.2 innings, top-50 nationally. McCullough’s best start yet came on April 6th, with six scoreless frames and nine strikeouts against Catawba.
