Lynchburg Deals Guilford Softball Doubleheader Sweep

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Lynchburg handed the Guilford softball team its first back-to-back losses for the first time since April 6th when the Hornets completed an 8-7 win in game one and a 12-2 (5 inns.) victory in game two on Wednesday, April 21st.

GAME 1: Lynchburg 8, Guilford 7

The Hornets took advantage of five hits and three Guilford errors to assume a 7-0 lead in the first two innings of the opening game.

However, Guilford battled back to score four runs in the top of the third, scoring the first of those runs on an error with Katie McNeill at the plate. Katey Griswold also reached on a fielding error, scoring Ray. Jessie Beck drove a single to left centerfield, scoring Griswold and McNeill in the process, to account for the final two runs of the frame.

Lynchburg scored its eighth run of the game in the bottom of the third, but the Quakers continued to chip away at the lead with a two-run fourth. The runs came on a two-run blast to left field by Casey Bunting, which scored Ally Morales in the process.

McNeill reached on an error in the seventh, allowing Taylor Ledbetter to score from second base.

Bunting (3-4, 2 RBI, run) led Guilford from the plate with a double and a home run. The top two hitters in the Quaker lineup, Kylie Richardson and Caitlyn Ray, also finished with two hits. Ray turned one of those two hits into a double for Guilford.

GAME 2: Lynchburg 12, Guilford 2 (5 inn.)

Two doubles and a two-RBI single by the Hornets in the home half of the first inning allowed Lynchburg to streak out to an 8-0 lead. The Hornets pushed that lead to 12-0 in the bottom of the second, converting a two-RBI triple and a two-RBI single to forge ahead by double figures.

After a scoreless third, Guilford responded with two runs in the fourth, slicing the margin to 10 runs. The Guilford runs came as Abbie Hill reached base on an error at shortstop. That error allowed both Grace Calus and Taylor Ledbetter to score.

Guilford (9-11, 7-11 ODAC) amassed just three hits in the game, receiving one each from Kylie Richardson, Calus and Jessie Beck. Lynchburg (25-13, 15-3 ODAC) tallied 11 hits and had four hitters with two hits each. Three of those hits went for extra bases.

Guilford closes out the regular season on Saturday, April 24th when the Quakers head to Roanoke for a doubleheader clash 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
