HPU Men & Women Track Recaps 4/23-4/24

High Point University women’s track and field continues to heat up as the Big South Outdoor Championships approach quickly. The Panthers seem to be peaking at the right as this weekend was one full of personal bests.

The PRs started Friday night (April 23rd) as Famke Heinst, Zoe Geis, and Lindsey Ickes all set PRs at the Charlotte Invitational. Heinst set a new school record in the 5000 with a time of 16.25.16. Letizia Jessica Marsico and Alicia Dawson continue their dominance in the field events as both earned first-place finishes in their respective events on Saturday (April 24th) at the Aggie Classic. The women’s 400 relay team was also victorious at the Aggie Classic. Nyile Facey won her heat of the 100m hurdles but did not run the final as it was canceled due to rain. The Panthers performed well in Greensboro while battling the elements.

HPU’s distance runners shinned bright on Friday night at the Charlotte Invitational as all four of The Panther women competing set new PRs. Heinst headlined the night setting a new school record in the 5000 with a time of 16:25.16 while Geis set a new PR in the 5000 as well with a time of 16: 33.50. Ickes who was also in the 5000 set a new personal best finishing with a time of 16:48.48. Heinst finished first in the 5000 while Geis finished second and Ickes fourth in what was a strong outing for HPU in the 5K. Sydney Bagus finished second in the 3000 Steeplechase with a personal best time of 11:09.93.

The weekend did not end for Geis and Heinst on Friday night both were back in action on Saturday in the Aggie Classic. Heinst finished first in the 1500m with a time of 4:27.38 while her teammates weren’t done setting PRs in the same race. Geis, Camryn Harper, and Ickes all set personal records in the 1500m, Geis with a time of 4:35.64, Harper with a time of 4:38.99, Ickes with a time of 4:40.85. Olive Allen finished third in the 800 with a PR time of 2:13.6 beating her previous PR by three seconds. High Point women’s distance closed out the weekend of personal records in the 5000, with four Panther PRs being set. Ashley Jones finished with a time of 17:14.58 smashing her old PR time by 35 seconds. Katie Taylor ran a PR time of 17:45.91, Tatum Castillo ran a personal best of 18:18.07 and Julianna Higgins finished with a PR of 19:07.44.

Marsico and Dawson continue to make waves in their respective field events each week as both set PRs, Marsico threw for a mark of 46.47m in the discus while Dawson recorded a mark of 6.12 in the long jump finishing second. Madison Reynolds finished seventh out of twenty-three with a mark of 5.38m. Julia Newman finished fourth in the javelin with a mark of 34.12m.

HPU’s men distance runners got the action rolling on Friday night (April 23rd) at the Charlotte Invitational as Siro Pina Cardona beat his PR in the 1500m by six seconds as he finished second with a time of 3:49.06. Hocine Bouchrak kept the strong performances going for HPU as he won the 3000m steeplechase.

Bouchrak finished first in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:04.51. Ian Miller also set a PR in the 3000m steeple with a time of 9:29.62. Including the women, all seven of the Panthers that competed at the Charlotte Invitational Friday night set personal bests.

On Saturday at the Aggie Classic, more HPU distance runners were in action, two High Point freshmen had stand-out performances for the Purple & White in the 3000m Steeplechase as Aiden Morrison finished second with a time of 9:33.16 while Jake Tarosky finished third with a time of 9:34.07. Phillip Sherwin finished third in the 5000m with a beating his previous personal record by 19 seconds as he finished with a time of 15:25.80.

In men’s pole vault Carter Clasper led the way finishing first with a mark of 4.70m, Adam Craig finished third with a mark of 4.70m as well. Larry Coaxum continues to put forth solid performances week in and week out as he finished fifth this week in the long jump and the triple jump. In the long jump, Coaxum recorded a mark of 6.41m and he recorded a jump of 13.46m in the triple.

In the javelin, Josh Brown earned a first-place finish with a throw of 51.27m while Wally Sample finished third with a mark of 46.26m in the javelin. Chris Van Niekerk finished third in the shot put with a mark of 17.06m as the Panthers performed well in the field events at a rainy Aggie Classic.
