GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Cameron Edmonds earned his first college save with two scoreless innings in Greensboro College’s 7-6 USA South Athletic Conference baseball win over visiting William Peace University Sunday afternoon. The Senior Day win at the Ted Leonard Recreation Center clinched the weekend series and improved Greensboro’s record to 12-17 (4-10 USA South).
William Peace chipped away at a 7-2 second-inning deficit and made it a one-run game on Hunter Ward’s two-out, RBI single in the seventh. Nathan Holt and Tyshawn Barrett also had RBI doubles in the Pacers’ three-run frame.
Edmond entered in the top of the eighth and promptly walked leadoff pinch-hitter Jamaiz Hunt. Momentum turned on the next play as Kevin Gonzalez bunted the ball on a line drive to Greensboro third baseman Casey Moore, who doubled up Hunt at first. Edmonds fanned leadoff batter Gavin Taylor to end the frame.
Edmonds yielded a two-out walk to Tyler Vaughn in the top of the ninth before catcher Scott McGuire gunned him down trying to steal second, which ended the game.
Greensboro opened the first inning with five straight hits off of William Peace starter Philip Berger (5-4). Cameron Peters and Ben Knauff both delivered two-run hits in the frame. The Pride tacked on an unearned run in the second, but Berger settled down and the Pacers’ relievers kept Greensboro scoreless the rest of the game.
Knuff, Greensboro’s lone non-senior in the lineup, had three hits and a stolen base to lead the Pride’s offense. Michael Garvey, Jr., and Scott McGuire added two hits apiece. Senior Eli Moravick (1-1) picked up the win with three middle innings in relief of senior starter Cole Cooper.
Holt, Barrett, and Alec Seaton each had two hits and scored twice for William Peace (20-15, 11-6 USA South). Peyton Howard allowed just one walk and fanned three in three otherwise perfect innings of relief.
Coach Avery Booker’s club hosts league-rival Mary Baldwin University Tuesday (4/28) at 4:00 p.m. in its home finale.
