College Men’s Lacrosse News – Five Greensboro Students Earn USA South Athletic Conference Honors

ROME, Ga. – Greensboro College seniors Tommy Barrett, Justin Matthews, and Spencer Kontoulas earned First Team All-USA South Athletic Conference lacrosse honors Thursday. Teammate Christopher Stallings was an All-East Division pick and Aidan Karmazinski earned All-Sportsmanship recognition. Pride head coach Mike Foderaro claimed the loop’s Coach of the Year Award in voting conducted by USA South head men’s lacrosse coaches.

Barrett, a 6-2, 190-pound long-stick midfielder, has started in each of his eight appearances and ranks second on the team with 14 caused turnovers. He also owns 21 ground balls, which sits ninth on the club. One of his best outings came in a March 7 win over Huntingdon College in which he picked up five ground balls and caused three miscues. Barrett was a second-team all-league selection in 2019 and has started 48 of 51 career appearances. He has five points, 99 ground balls, and five points in that time.

Matthews, a 6-2, 200-pound defender, has started all 12 regular-season games for the Pride. He has three points on two goals and an assist but his greatest contributions have come at the other end of the field. Matthews stands fourth on the club with 34 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. His goals came in Greensboro wins over Huntingdon and William Peace University. He picked up a season-best seven ground balls March 17 in a victory over Averett University. Matthews is a four-year starter for Greensboro with 125 ground balls, 68 caused turnovers, and eight points in 55 contests.

Kontoulas is a 6-0, 205-pound senior midfielder who shares third place among the team leaders with a career-high 43 points in 11 games off the bench. He leads Greensboro and ranks second in the league with 22 assists, also a personal best. His 21 goals stand fourth on the club. Kontoulas recorded at least two points in each of the Pride’s 12 regular-season games with six three-goal contests. He has a season-high six points (3g, 3a) versus Averett and notched a season-high four helpers among five points versus Pfeiffer University March 12. Kontoulas has 109 points on 73 goals and 36 assists through 50 career appearances.

A 5-10, 150-pound senior goalie, Stallings has started all 12 contests in the cage and played all but 88 minutes there. He boasts an 8.84 goals against average and a .587 saves percentage, which both rank second among USA South leaders. His 132 saves rank second in the conference and his 25 ground balls stand sixth on the team. Stallings has made 11 or more stops in eight of 12 contests, including a season-best 18 in a February victory over Birmingham Southern College. In his two seasons with the Pride, Stallings has a 9.56 goals against average and .579 saves percentage in 20 starts.

Karmazinski is a 6-3, 220-pound defender who sits topped the team with 16 caused turnovers and is with 35 ground balls, the league’s 15th-highest total. He also scored a goal and has been whistled for just three penalties this season. Karmazinski made a season-high six pickups in Greensboro’s season-opening victory over Oglethorpe University. The three-year starter has 50 caused turnovers, 98 ground balls, and two points in 36 games with 34 starting nods.

The five students helped Foderaro’s club to a 10-2 record (6-2 USA South) match the school record for wins in a season. Now in his seventh season at Greensboro, he was a starting goalie on the Pride’s 2009 squad that also won 10 games. Greensboro placed second in the USA South East Division and earned one of four spots in the USA South Men’s Lacrosse Tournament. Foderaro’s club visits top-seeded Pfeiffer University Saturday (5/1) in the East Division final.
