GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford’s Derek Zacatenco netted four goals and handed out three assists while teammate Bryce Craig added three goals and an assist of his own, but it was the trio of Austin Hudson, Taylor Witherell and Tommy MacCowatt who combined for 10 goals that helped Washington & Lee earn a 17-10 win in ODAC men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday, April 28th.
The Quakers assumed the early 2-0 lead with goals by Zacatenco and Connor Sweeney in the first three minutes of the opening quarter. Guilford (2-4, 2-4 ODAC) stretched its lead to 5-2 following a series of strikes by Brendan Sweeney, Bryce Craig and Connor Sweeney with 3:20 remaining in the frame. Washington & Lee (9-4, 8-1 ODAC) retaliated with a pair of goals of its own, trimming the lead to 5-4 entering the second quarter.
The Generals responded the challenge with four straight goals to open the second quarter, moving in front 8-5 in the process, but Zacatenco sent Guilford to the intermission with a goal, following a pass from Brennan Sweeney with 1:27 remaining.
With an 8-6 advantage entering the third quarter, Washington & Lee received back-to-back goals from Taylor Witherell to move into double figures. Craig added a pair of goals for the Quakers, slicing the margin to 11-8 at one point, but it was a strike by Austin Hudson that allowed Washington & Lee to lead by four closing the third quarter.
Hudson kept his hot hand in the fourth, scoring two of the first five goals, as the Generals built a 17-8 advantage. Zacatenco closed out the game with consecutive goals, helping the Quakers reach double figures in the process.
Jack Rogers (2-4) suffered the setback despite making 13 saves against the Generals. His counterpart, Jack Taylor (9-4) made eight saves as the starter for the Generals.
Guilford closes out the 2021 season on Saturday, May 1st when the Quakers host Shenandoah for Senior Day festivities at 1:00 p.m.
