HiToms Add Luke Barrow and Gavin Mortenson to Bolster Pitching Staff

High Point/Thomasville, NC – The High Point-Thomasville HiToms are pleased to announce the acquisitions of two pitchers, Western Carolina’s Gavin Mortenson and Coastal Carolina’s Luke Barrow to the 2021 roster. Both freshmen, these two Division I pitchers have made up for inexperience with skill in their first tastes of college action.

Summerfield, NC’s Gavin Mortenson suffered a broken wrist in his fifth career start at Western Carolina, ending his season. However, his five appearances were very impressive at the high elevation of Cullowhee. In 24 innings, Mortenson was 2-0 with a 4.88 ERA and a great 23:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. His most impressive start was against the St. John’s on March 13th. In a 21-3 drubbing of the Red Storm, Mortenson was electric, striking out seven across six innings, allowing just two runs.

At Northwest Guilford High School, Mortenson was a versatile two-way player, bursting onto the scene in a wonderful 2019 season. In seven games, Mortenson mowed down opponents, wrapping the campaign with a tiny 0.66 ERA. With the bat, Mortenson hit .422 over his high school career.

Former Wesleyan righty Luke Barrow is returning to Finch Field after wrapping up his freshman season at Coastal Carolina. The Oak Ridge native has an impressive 3.44 ERA working out of the CCU bullpen in 2020. Producing strikeouts has been the key for Barrow early in his college career. As of April 27th, Barrow has 30 strikeouts in just 18.1 innings and has not allowed a home run.
