Cenal, Moravick Post Combined Shutout as Greensboro Splits Two Games at Averett

DANVILLE, Va.—-Greensboro College’s Jared Cenal and Eli Moravick combined to throw the Pride’s second shutout of the season in game one of Saturday afternoon’s USA South Athletic Conference (USA South) doubleheader with Averett University as the Pride and Cougars split the twinbill. The Pride claimed game one, 8-0, while Averett took game two, 5-4.

Cenal (2-3) and Moravick combined to yield only five hits in the game one victory. Cenal threw seven-innings and struck out three batters as he faced the minimum in the first two innings thanks to two successful pick-off attempts at first base to end each of the first two frames. Cenal also faced the minimum in the fourth and fifth innings as the Pride’s hurler allowed only one runner to reach third base during his outing, which came in the third frame. Averett tallied three consecutive singles with two outs before Scotty McGuire aided Cenal with a successful pickoff of the runner at third base to end the Cougars’ inning with a pick off for the third straight time.

Moravick relieved Cenal in the eighth inning and surrendered no hits in his two-inning outing. The senior reliever quickly recovered after throwing a walk to open his outing in the inning by responding with back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to retire the Cougars in the frame.

McGuire also aided his hurlers with run support, sparking the Pride’s three-run opening-inning rally with a two-out infield RBI-single. Brayden King (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) capped the rally with a two-RBI triple in the next at-bat to put the Pride ahead. The Pride’s other three-run rally came in the top of the ninth inning when Cameron Peters (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Hunter Curtis (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) fueled the rally with a two-out, two-RBI single to right-center field as the Pride easily earned the game-one win.

Averett broke the ice after three scoreless innings in game two with a fourth-inning home run from Kyle Wilson to lead off the inning. The Pride countered with a four-run fifth inning as D.J. Lowry connected on a two-RBI double to spark the rally. Michael Garvey Jr. (Oak Ridge, N.C./Northwest Guilford) added an RBI-double with one out while Peters added a two-out RBI-single.

Ryan Scheiderer posted Averett’s response in the next half-inning with a two-RBi double down the left field line before game-two starting pitcher Cole Cooper recovered to post three-straight strikeouts to end the inning and complete his outing. Averett tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when Ryan Traylor scored on a wild pitch to put the Cougars ahead on the way to a game-two win.

Curtis and King each tallied two RBI in game one as Curtis finished with three hits over both games. Lowry posted a three-for-three effort in game two with two RBI. Devin Brackin along with McGuire and Peters each tallied two hits and one RBI apiece to represent the three Pride batters that posted multi-hit efforts in game one.

Nolan Maccabe led Averett with a four-for-eight effort over both contests. He was the only batter for the Cougars to post multiple hits in game one and one of two batters to post a multi-ht effort in game two.

Cameron Edmonds (1-2) took the game-two loss for the Pride in a three-inning relief effort where he struck out three batters and walked two.

Avery Spicer (2-4) took the game-one loss for Averett, fanning eight batters in a seven-inning start where he gave up five runs on six hits. Cole Spain (2-2) claimed the game-two win after throwing the final one and one-third innings for Averett where he yielded just one hit.

The Pride (14-18, 6-11 USA South) and the Cougars finish out their season-concluding three-game USA South series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Danville, Va.
