EAST GREENSBORO – Former starting North Carolina A&T cornerback Mac McCain III signed a free-agent contract with the Denver Broncos Sunday after the 2021 National Football League (NFL) Draft, Thursday-Saturday.

McCain surrendered his last year of eligibility with the N.C. A&T football team to enter the NFL Draft. In three seasons on the field, he became one of the best cover corners in the program’s history as his tremendous skill set often put him at the forefront of some of the greatest moments in Aggie football history.

As a freshman in 2017, he had two crucial second-half interceptions in the Aggies upset win over the Charlotte 49ers. His interception in the third quarter was returned 22 yards and gave the Aggies the ball at the 49ers 10-yard line, which led to a 1-yard Marquell Cartwright touchdown and a 28-10 Aggies lead.

His second INT of the game came in the fourth quarter, putting the 49ers away as he returned it 74 yards for a touchdown with 24 seconds remaining in the game.

As a sophomore in 2018, he intercepted an East Carolina pass deep in the end zone and returned it 108 yards for a game-turning touchdown in the first quarter as the Aggies went on to defeat ECU 28-23 in Greenville, N.C.

McCain finished his career with two career 100-yard INT returns for touchdowns. He earned multiple Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-American honors, including from the Associated Press, Phil Steele Magazine, FCS STATS and BoxToRow. In the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), he earned three all-conference honors. In two of those seasons, he was named first-team All-MEAC.

In 20 career games, he recorded 113 tackles (66 unassisted), eight interceptions, 22 pass breakups and 30 pass deflections. He secured three rookie of the week honors and two defensive player of the week recognitions from the MEAC during his career. He also had 374 career interception return yards and four touchdowns. Before the 2019 season, FCS STATS placed him on the Buck Buchanan Award Watch List for best FCS defensive player in the nation.

McCain has an undergraduate degree from N.C. A&T and a master’s.
