Elon Men’s Basketball Announces Signing of Andrew Junkin

ELON, N.C. – Elon University men’s basketball and head coach Mike Schrage announced the signing of Mississippi State graduate-transfer Andrew Junkin on Thursday, May 6.

“Andrew is another transfer we were already familiar with due to a relationship with Josh Pierre on our staff,” Schrage explained. “He is our kind of guy…a hard worker, a competitor, and all about the team. He is a big body that will help us daily. He is also a great example of the kind of student-athletes we love to have at Elon. He completed his undergraduate degree in 3 years and will be working on his masters while here. Please welcome Andrew and his parents – Richard and Debra – to our family.”

A 6-11 forward out of New Hope, Miss., Junkin joins the Phoenix after three years at Mississippi State. After redshirting as a freshman in 2018-19, Junkin made his collegiate debut against New Orleans in 2019-20, before registering his first college block a couple of games later against Coastal Carolina. As a redshirt-sophpomore, Junkin scored the first points of his career against Jackson State, logging two points in three minutes of action. Equally dedicated off the court, Junkin has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in each of his seasons at Mississippi State.

While in high school under coach Drew McBrayer, Junkin averaged 11.3 ppg, adding 8.3 rpg and 4.1 bpg in his senior season of 2017-18. The New Hope High School product improved his averages to 15.0 ppg and 13.5 rpg in the Class 4A State Tournament to round out his senior year.

Junkin will join Elon’s men’s basketball program in the fall of 2021.
