Elon Phoenix Earns Third Seed for CAA Softball Championships

RICHMOND, Va. – The Elon University softball team will enter the 2021 Colonial Athletic Association Softball Championship as the No. 3 seed as the league announced the field and pairings for the tournament on Sunday, May 9. The CAA Softball Championships return to Harrisonburg, Va., for the seventh consecutive season and will be played at Veterans Memorial Park on the campus of James Madison University.

The five-team, double-elimination tournament is scheduled to take place from May 12 through May 14 with the Championship game slotted for noon on Friday, May 14. If necessary, a second game will be played immediately following the first game.

Elon opens the tournament on Wednesday, May 12, versus No. 2 seed Drexel at 2 p.m. The Phoenix and Dragons join host and No. 1 seed James Madison in the tournament along with No. 4 seed Delaware and No. 5 seed Hofstra. The Blue Hens and the Pride kick off the tournament on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the winner advancing to face the Dukes later that evening at 5 p.m. The losers of games one and two fall to the consolation ladder and play Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.

The CAA adopted a divisional format during the 2021 softball season to ensure the health and safety of all student-athletes, coaches and institutional staff members during an unprecedented year. The eight teams were split into two divisions based on geographical location to create the North Division: Delaware, Drexel, Hofstra and Towson as well as the South Division: Charleston, Elon, James Madison and UNCW.

The championship field was comprised of the top two teams from each division earning a berth in the CAA tournament along with an at-large team chosen by a seeding and selection committee. The top team from the North and South were awarded the first and second seed in the bracket while the remaining three teams were seeding third through fifth as determined by the seeding and selection committee.

There will be no public sale of tickets for the CAA Softball Championship. Attendance will be limited to families and guests of student-athletes and coaches. However, full coverage of the CAA Softball Championship will be streamed on FloSports (FloSports.tv/CAA).
