HPU Panthers Perform Well in Decathlon at Day 1 2021 Big South Outdoor Championship

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University men’s track & Field finished day one of the 2021 Big South outdoor Championships with strong performances in the decathlon. Austen Cave posted the first podium finish of the Big South Outdoor Championship meet for the Purple & White.

Panther Performances

  • Cave earned the first 2021 Big South Outdoor Track and Field podium finish of the meet for the Panther men with a time of 30:40.08 in the 10,000m.
  • Hunter Steinau finished sixth in the 10,000m with a time of 31:54.39.
  • Spencer Smucker finished eighth in the 10,000m with a time of 32:03.94.
  • In the decathlon, Evan Mills finished first in the 400m and the long jump while Gabriel Stainback finished first in the men’s shot put, men’s long jump, and finished second in the 100.
  • After five events in the decathlon, Stainback leads the way in points with 3644, while Mills is right behind him in second with 3505.

Both the heptathlon and the decathlon champions will be decided tomorrow with the remaining multi-events all concluding tomorrow afternoon. Hocine Bouchrak will be in the 3000m Steeple. Terris Burton II will be competing in the 400m hurdles while Chris Van Niekerk will be throwing the shot put.


Women’s Track Recap

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University women’s track & Field finished day one of the 2021 Big South Outdoor Championships with one individual champion already crowned in Zoe Geis in the 10,000. A lot of the heptathlon was completed during day one of the Big South Championship meet.

Panther Performances

  • Geis claimed the first HPU women’s 2021 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Individual Championship with a time of 35:37.04 in the 10,000m.
  • Lindsey Ickes finished third in the 10,000m with a time of 36:40.65.
  • In the Heptathlon, Lexi Crompton finished first in the 100m Hurdles and the high jump while Madison Reynolds finished first in the women’s shot put.
  • After four events in the Hep Crompton leads the way in points with 3049, while Reynolds is right behind her in second with 2882.
  • Amanda Scattergood set a new personal record with a mark of 42.24m in the hammer.
