ROME, Ga.—The USA South Athletic Conference (USA South) announced today that Greensboro College’s Michael Garvey Jr. (Oak Ridge, N.C./Northwest Guilford) and Scotty McGuire were named members of the All-USA South East Division Team with teammate Ben Knuff being named to the league’s All-Sportsmanship Team.
Garvey, the Pride’s shortstop, earned a spot on the All-USA South East Division First Team. Garvey finished the season currently standing in a tie for third in the league with 54 hits and fifth in the conference in batting average (.380). Garvey’s stolen bases (18) stand fifth in the USA South while he accumulated the second-most fielding assists in the league (95). The shortstop started all 32 games played and posted eight doubles, one triple, a home run, and 14 RBI as the Pride’s lead-off batter. Garvey opened the season hitting safely in 14 of the first 15 contests and closed the season with a seven-game hitting streak. He hit safely in all but three matchups during the season, posting 18 multi-hit efforts with five games where he collected three or more hits. The shortstop’s 33 hits in USA South play is second in the league while his eight doubles in conference contests tied for the second-most in the USA South. The shortstop posted two four-hit games in the April 11-12 conference series at Methodist where he went four-for-five with a double and a stolen base in game one of the April 11 doubleheader and followed the effort in the series finale the next day with a four-for-six effort with one RBI and two stolen bases.
McGuire, a fifth-year senior catcher, was named to the All-USA South East Division Second Team. He posted a late-season 12-game hitting streak while hitting safely in 13 of the final 14 games. The senior appeared in 26 contests, posting 139 putouts to stand 15th in the USA South in that category. McGuire’s 86 putouts in conference play is the ninth-most in the league. The Pride’s catcher posted a .327 batting average with four doubles, two home runs, and 22 RBI. McGuire posted ten multi-hit efforts over the season with five three-hit games. The senior hit a grand slam in the April 12 conference series finale at Methodist, representing one of his three multi-RBI games. The catcher hit three-for-five with three RBI in the April 1 contest at Lynchburg while posting a three-hit game with a home run and four RBI in the April 27 matchup against Mary Baldwin. The all-conference honor is McGuire’s third of his career, having earned All-USA South Second Team honors in 2018 and 2019.
Knuff represents the Pride on the league’s All-Sportsmanship Team after a four-year career in the Pride’s outfield. The senior appeared in 14 contests in 2021 with three starts on the season, posting a three-hit effort in the April 25 victory against William Peace where he collected two RBI.
Coach Avery Booker’s Pride finished the season with a 15-18 overall record (7-11 USA South), winning five of their last seven contests and their last two conference series.
