Elon Men’s Basketball Set To Compete In 2021 Charleston Classic

ELON, N.C. – ESPN Events has announced the field for the 2021 Shriner’s Children’s Charleston Classic on Thursday, May 20. The tournament will feature Elon University men’s basketball along with Boise State, Clemson, Marquette, St. Bonaventure, Temple and West Virginia and will take place at the T.D. Arena in Charleston, S.C. on November 18, 19 and 21.

“As we continue to grow our program one of our goals was to be invited to tournaments just like this…on national television at Thanksgiving time versus conferences from all over the country,” head coach Mike Schrage explained. “It is a big step not just for our team but our entire university in a city we are familiar with in our conference and also consider a second home. We appreciate the opportunity and will embrace the challenge of competing against an impressive field.”

The Charleston Classic will consist of 12 games across three days, with the winner of each game continuing to advance in the bracket. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout the tournament will then play for a chance to be crowned tournament champion.

Elon enters the 2021-22 season following a year in which it made the program’s first-ever run to the CAA Tournament Championship game. The Phoenix rounded out the 2020-21 campaign with a 10-9 overall mark and was a winner in seven of its last eight games. Next season, Elon returns three of its five starters and 12 of 16 players overall, including All-CAA honorees Hunter McIntosh and Darius Burford. Other returnees for the maroon and gold include Chuck Hannah, JaDun Michael, Charlie Mendys, Kris Wooten, Jerald Gillens-Butler, Zac Ervin, Lars Nilsen, Michael Graham, Ben Daugherty and Hunter Woods. Transfers Torrence Watson and Andrew Junkin will join Sam Sherry and R.J. Noord as new additions to the team in the upcoming season.

Tickets will be available for purchase following the announcement of the complete tournament schedule later this summer. In the meantime, fans can secure up to $25 off each all-tournament ticket by signing up for the pre-sale at www.charlestonclassic.com.
