GC’s Michael Garvey, Jr. Claims Two All-Region Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Greensboro College shortstop Michael Garvey, Jr.(Northwest Guilford High School) claimed two Divison III All-Region honors earlier this afternoon, being named to the All-South Region Third Team in both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-Region Teams and the D3Baseball.com All-Region Teams. The Pride’s shortstop now tallies three postseason honors for 2021 after being named to the All-USA South East Division First Team in May as the division’s top shortstop.
Garvey finished the season in a tie for fourth in the USA South Athletic Conference (USA South) with 54 hits and fourth in the conference in batting average (.380). Garvey’s stolen bases (18) stand fifth in the USA South while he accumulated the second-most fielding assists in the league (95). The shortstop started all 32 games played and posted eight doubles, one triple, a home run, and 14 RBI as the Pride’s lead-off batter. Garvey opened the season hitting safely in 14 of the first 15 contests and closed the season with a seven-game hitting streak. He hit safely in all but three matchups during the season, posting 18 multi-hit efforts with five games where he collected three or more hits. The shortstop’s 33 hits in USA South play is second in the league while his eight doubles in conference contests tied for the second-most in the USA South.
The shortstop collected seven hits, two doubles, and two stolen bases in the three-game conference series at nationally-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College March 20-21. That effort sparked a ten-game hitting streak where the junior tallied seven multi-hit games during the ten-game stretch. With two four-hit games in the April 11-12 three-game USA South series at Methodist University, Garvey led the team with nine hits in the series with two doubles and one RBI while stealing three bases. He went four-for-five with a double and a stolen base in game one of the April 11 doubleheader and followed the effort in the series finale the next day with a four-for-six effort with one RBI and two stolen bases. Garvey helped to spark the Pride in their conference series finale at home against William Peace University April 23-25, posting six hits and two stolen bases as the Pride claimed two of three games from the Pacers.
Coach Avery Booker’s squad finished with a 15-18 overall record, 7-11 in USA South play. The Pride claimed victory in their final two USA South series and won five of their last seven games in conference to close the season. Garvey is expected to return as the Pride’s shortstop next season.
