HiToms Fall in Game Five of Deep River Series

High Point/Thomasville, NC – The High Point-Thomasville HiToms (10-5) were silenced by the Asheboro Copperheads (8-9) on Tuesday, 2-4, in a battle of two Coastal Plain League rivals.

Ben Peterson was dealt the tough-luck loss with eight strikeouts across six innings in his longest start of the season. Peterson was relieved by Tyrese Hearst and Will Lancaster, two both struck out two in a single scoreless inning. Lancaster, a Davidson County native, has a team-leading 23 strikeouts, top-ten in the Coastal Plain League.

The HiToms were held to three hits but did work with their limited offensive production. UNC Catcher Max Riemer took a hanging breaking ball from Greg Brown over the right-field fence for his second round-tripper in two games. In the seventh, another UNC Tar Heel came through clutch.

Second baseman Colby Wilkerson produced the second run all by himself. Wilkerson smashed a double up the left-center gap with two outs in the inning. In the next at bat, Wilkerson gambled, taking third base on a wild pitch that was blocked well by Copperheads Catcher Jack Schad. A few pitches later, a wild pitch went behind Schad, allowing Wilkerson to come home.

The Copperheads led from the first inning onward from RBIs in the first and second by Andrew Hernandez and Joey Berini.
