MASTERS CHAMPIONS HIDEKI MATSUYAMA, PATRICK REED AND ZACH JOHNSON AMONG LATE ADDITIONS TO WYNDHAM CHAMPIONSHIP; CURRENT FIELD ANNOUNCED
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Masters champions Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Reed and Zach Johnson were late-afternoon additions to the Wyndham Championship field, the tournament announced today. The 82nd annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 11-15, 2021 at Sedgefield Country Club.
These players join fan favorite Rickie Fowler, world No. 8 Louis Oosthuizen, two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson, major winners Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Francesco Molinari, Gary Woodland, Charl Schwartzel and European Ryder Cup Captain and three-time major winner Padraig Harrington, Tommy Fleetwood, two-time Wyndham champion Brandt Snedeker, 2011 Wyndham champion and 2012 U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, FedExCup No. 11 Jason Kokrak, FedExCup No. 13 Sam Burns, Matthew Wolff, Kevin Kisner, defending champion Jim Herman, former champions Si Woo Kim, J.T. Poston, Ryan Moore, Camilo Villegas and K.J. Choi, East Carolina University alum Harold Varner III, Matt Kuchar, Will Zalatoris and 2011 FedExCup champion Bill Haas in the tournament field.
Matsuyama, the reigning Masters champion, is 22nd in the current FedExCup point standings and 20th in the Official World Golf Rankings. He will make his seventh Wyndham Championship appearance next week; he finished tied for third in 2016 and tied for 11th in 2018 for his best finishes at Sedgefield. Matsuyama is a six-time PGA TOUR winner with eight international victories to his credit. In addition to his 2021 Masters victory, he finished tied for second at the Vivint Houston Open and tied for 13th at the 2020 Masters Tournament, which was played during this PGA TOUR season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He is a native and resident of Japan.
Reed, the 2018 Masters champion, is having an excellent season winning the Farmers Insurance Open, finishing fifth at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide and tied for sixth at the Wells Fargo Championship. He is 19th in the current FedExCup point standings and 15th in the Official World Golf Rankings. A native and resident of Texas, the nine-time PGA TOUR winner captured his first PGA TOUR victory here in 2013 following an epic two-hole playoff with 2015 FedExCup champion Jordan Spieth. Reed represented the United States in the Ryder Cup in 2014, ’16 and ’18 and in the Presidents Cup in 2015, ‘17 and ‘19. This year’s tournament will be Reed’s seventh Wyndham Championship appearance; he finished tied for ninth here last year – it was his best finish since winning in 2013.
Johnson, a 12-time PGA TOUR winner, won the Masters in 2007 and the Open Championship in 2015. He has five previous Wyndham Championship appearances; he finished tied for seventh last year and tied for fifth in 2013 for his best finishes here. The Iowa native played in the Ryder Cup in 2006, ’10, ’12, ’14 and ’16. He played the Presidents Cup in 2007, ’09, ’13 and ’15. His best finishes this season are tied for sixth at the RSM Classic, tied for eighth at the Honda Classic and tied for eighth at the 2020 U.S. Open, which was played earlier this season. He is 103rd in the current FedExCup point standings and 132nd in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Those playing on sponsor exemptions next week are 2011 FedExCup champion Bill Haas, Harrington, Duke University alumnus Alex Smalley, University of Georgia alumnus and SEC Player of the Year Davis Thompson, 2014 Wyndham Championship winner Camilo Villegas and world No. 30 and Wake Forest alumnus Will Zalatoris, who has PGA TOUR special temporary status.
Australian Jason Day injured his back and withdrew from the field. Golfers can join the field until 30 minutes after today’s round is complete at the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nev.; additional players could join the field later tonight. In addition, the top-four finishers from Monday’s qualifying tournament will also join the field. The current field is below:
