Looking Over the Crops:Monday night at Grimsley High School Football Practice

It was a busy practice for the Grimsley Whirlies, over at Grimsley High School on Monday night….Football practice was going on in full force, with both the Varsity and JV Whirlies going at it, in full gear…Grimsley is now in pads, but there wasn’t any hard hitting going on out there on Monday night….

Plenty of drills and plenty of group work for the Whiriles…..Whirlies’ football coach Darryl Brown was running around all over the place, and his 8 year-old son, Cam, was not far behind…The Browns were keeping a close watch on the Monday night football practice..

The JV Whirlies were in blue jerseys and the Varsity Whirlies were in white jerseys…Grimsley senior defensive lineman Travis Shaw, was not in a jersey, he is still resting his injured arm/shoulder…Shaw injured his arm in last year’s 4-A State Championship football game, and his availability for the Whirlies is currently day-to-day, and they feel like Travis Shaw will be ready for the first Friday Night Game of the 2021 season…

Grimsley had their offensive line group working with Coach Norman Weeks, and the veteran offensive and defensive line coach had his linemen working very hard on blocking schemes and body movement..Coach Weeks asked his linemen a very important question while he was teaching them some blocking techniques…Coach Weeks asked the linemen, “Why are you having conversation here, while you should be quiet, and you should be listening???” Coach Weeks wanted to know why any of these young men would be talking, while he was trying to teach them…Coach Weeks was working to get his point across, “that you don’t need to be talking on my time”…”I am trying to teach you something”….Coach Weeks doing a fine job of coaching his linemen up today, and it takes a special coach, to reach those JV players…

Coach Bryan Carter, the former All-State Grimsley kicker, was working with the Grimsley punters and kickers on Monday afternoon…Coach Carter has been a great addition to the Grimsley football coaching staff…

Coach Brown had the Varsity Whirlies working on the offense vs. the defense, but much of the Varsity focus was on the passing game, and Grimsley’s senior quarterback, Alonza Barnett III, threw his share of passes, and the kid has a real strong arm, and several of his LONG passes went through the hands of his receivers, and if the receivers had those passes in hand, and then they dropped the pass, the receiver was required to do 50 push ups, and on several occasions if Coach Brown felt like the entire team was losing their focus, then the entire Grimsley Varsity football team, were doing the 50 push ups…Coach Brown saw the need for his team to do the push ups a number of times on Monday night, and Coach Brown reminded his team that they have a scrimmage due up on Wednesday, and he told them they were not ready, but they better GET READY…..

Grimsley assistant coach Joe Rigsbee was giving the offense many their plays today, and again what we saw was not a lot of heavy and hard hitting, but we saw Grimsley working on getting their timing down, between their quarterbacks and their receivers…Coach Weeks had those linemen working to remember the snap count, so they can get off of the ball on time…As Coach Weeks emphasized to his big boys, “there is a big difference between one and two, when it comes to the football snap count”…

We saw Grimsley senior defensive lineman, #22 Tamorye Thompson working hard out there today, and you couldn’t miss the Jarrett kid, he is the new Grimsley defensive lineman, who checks in at 6’5/330…One other thing the young lineman were doing today, was lining up on the fire hose…The fire hose is long and numbered, and it allows you to learn what gap you are supposed to line up on/at, and it is helpful in making sure your offensive and defensive lines are straight….The last thing you want, is a crooked group of linemen….That line needs to be straight, and everyone needs to be coming off of the ball at the same time, on the offensive side of the ball…On the defensive side, it is all about shooting that gap, and getting past your man, and getting into the offensive backfield, where you can create havoc…

Hard work, turning into good work today for Grimsley, and the rewards and the benefits of their work being turned in today, will begin to show up in the first Friday night football game of the season, on Friday night, August 20….The upcoming Grimsley scrimmages for the Whirlies this week, will be for fine tuning, the offense and the defense….

We will see you over there, on Friday night….

++++++++++There were probably 40-45 Varsity players out there for Grimsley on Monday night, and around 50-55 JV players…Grimsley had an interpreter who did sign language for the players that needed that help, and it was very beneficial for the kids working down there on the offensive and defensive lines…The lady doing the sign language was a big part of the program….++++++++++

  1. Andy, does Grimsley still have the JV Qb from the spring?, I didn’t see anything in the article regarding him?, has he transferred? I watched some games on TV and would love to know where this kid is!

  2. He is still there, and Coach Brown said he is coming along good…I think Alonza Barnett III wears #14, and his backup, the young man you are referring to, he wears #17…Everybody needs to come out and see these guys on Friday night at their scrimmage/Jamboree…

  3. Not sure, but do know this….Travis Shaw, defensive lineman from Grimsley HS, will announce what college he plans to attend, on Saturday August 21, at 6pm, at Jamieson Stadium….Some say that Clemson and North Carolina are the front-runners for Shaw’s college services…

  4. MAYBE IF THE OTHER PROGRAMS IN GUILFORD OR FOR THAT MATTER THE WHOLE STATE OF N.C HAD COACHING STAFFS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF COACH BROWN AND HIS STAFF. THERE WOULD BE NO TRANSFERS.

    FEAR THE G!!!!!!!!!!
