Looking at the Crops:Thursday night Football Practice at Northern Guilford High School

Arrived out at Northern Guilford High School tonight at around 6pm and the Pee Wee football team was out there practicing on the Spencer-Dixon Road field, but the rest of the place was kind of quiet…

The Northern Guilford varsity team was due out for practice at 6:10 pm, there was lightning in the area, so NG varsity and JV practice got held up/postponed for about an hour, while the lightning was still in the area…

I planted myself inside the main building in the commons area, and I looked over some of the NG Nighthawks football records that were posted along the wall…T.J. Logan with 6,879 career rushing yards, on 708 carries, from 2009-20012….Single season rushing record, T.J. Logan with 3,146 yards, in 2012…Career scoring for Logan with 123 touchdowns, 10 two-point conversions, for 758 points…Single-season scoring, T.J. Logan with 54 TD’s, in 2012…More records, and some of them have been broken, but they are on the wall, out in the commons area at Northern Guilford High School…Recent graduated Will Lenard, now has the single-season and career passing records for Northern Guilford….

One thing I learned before practice today, is that Northern Guilford’s defensive back coach for this 2021 season, is the former Guilford College head football coach, Chris Rusiewicz…Coach Rusiewicz, now the DB’s coach, at Northern Guilford High School…

Northern Guilford was working today, in preparation for their trip to Grimsley tomorrow for the D.J. Reader Football Jamboree…On Friday, Northern Guilford will be facing Dudley and WS Reynolds…

After the one-hour lightning delay, the Northern Guilford football practice got going at around 7:10pm…The Varsity and JV teams have around 100 players out for this year’s teams…One hundred total, between the two teams….Northern started out practice today with some light running and then turned that into some stretching…Then they did some more stretching, with standing stretching and moving stretching…Then NG began some running stretching and some karaoke….And this was the running and stretching-type karaoke, and not the music and singing karaoke…

After the karaoke, Northern began some running drills, and in the beginning it was 50% effort on the running, and then it was time to get looser, and then running pace, was stepped up to 75% effort…The coaches didn’t want to kill the players with running at the beginning of practice, they just wanted to make sure the football players were loose…

There was one group of players in purple jerseys and another group of players, in white jerseys….Hard to tell which ones were the JV’s and which ones were the varsity, but there were quite a few Varsity players in the purple jerseys….

After all of the running and stretching to begin the practice, Northern went to work in groups, with receivers catching passes, the quarterbacks throwing passes with the QB coach, the running backs were running run plays, and a large group, the DB’s and LB’s were working on pass protection, and working on their drops, and the linebackers were also working their rush into the backfield, plus the linemen were working on staying low and running through the pipes, and the linemen also went over and hit the sled…

The linemen didn’t drive the sled, they were just working on popping the sled….The QB’s and receivers got together after a while and they started tying down, and locking down their pass routes….Got to get them right/correct, and the QB timing is crucial, got to lay that pass up there, where the receiver can run under the ball…….

This was in some ways like a game-day preparation, since Northern will be over at Grimsley playing Dudley, and WS Reynolds tomorrow/Friday….

Here are just a couple of names to watch out for this season, from Northern Guilford HS…
Jordan Mcinnis RB
Terrell Timmons WR
Manny Elliott WR
Nkwenti Achina LB
Jack Mercer QB
Austin Flippen WR
Benjamin Bluitt SS

  1. It’s not karaoke in football, it’s carioca. Karaoke is a musical singalong to backing tracks, and carioca is a type of dance movement that is done to stretch and loosen up for sports.

I tried to explain that to my high school soccer coach back in the day. He told me to shut up and run.

  2. Never seen that before…Never knew that, but you learn something new every day….If some of our current players are aware of this, they are more advanced in their learning than we realize….
