Checking Out the Crops:Monday Night Football Practice at Eastern Guilford High School

A couple of key players to be watching for include, QB’s Tyrek Boyd and Jackson Jones, plus running back Jayden Evans…Plus Marcus Bynum, a Preseason Third Team All-State Defensive Back, at the Friday Nights in Carolina site…

It was the Eastern Guilford Wildcats working in the rain, on Monday night, at Eastern Guilford High School…Eastern was in Game-Week mode, as they prepare to travel this Friday night, to Johnny Roscoe Stadium, where they will take on the Northern Guilford Nighthawks…

I grabbed my umbrella out of the car, and made my way over to Eastern Guilford football practice field, just above the tennis courts, up on the hill, at EGHS….

The Monday night football practice got going around 6pm, and the EG Wildcats were working in around six different groups, the ‘Cats were making the most of their Monday night/afternoon practice time…

There must have been somewhere near 80-90 Cat kids out there practicing on Monday…The team was working out in helmets, shorts and shoulder pads, so this was like a Game Week day one of practice, and like the team(‘Cats) were coming back from a Friday night football game, and EG was in a scrimmage back on Friday night…

Game Week mode rolls with a semi-light practice on Monday, heavy work in full pads/gear on Tuesday where you either focus on the Offense or Defense…The Wednesday plan usually rolls with another heavy workload on Wednesday, where you work on the part of the game, either Offense or Defense, you pick up where you left off on Tuesday…Thursday is usually super-light practice with just helmets, shorts, and T-shirts….You get things done in pretty quick order during the Thursday practice…
(Then comes Friday Game Day, and you better be ready.)

Eastern Guilford was still working on Week One details today, since this Friday night, August 20, will be their first regular season game of 2021…

Eastern had the group work going today, and the kicker was working out by himself, up by the goal post, there on the West end of the practice field….In the other groups, the offense was working on plays with the running backs focusing on their inside running play, the linemen were running through the pipes, where they were getting used to staying low, and getting off of the ball on time, with the right snap count…

The defensive players were working on pass coverage in their group with some of the LB’s and DB’s and D-linemen were also working on getting rid of the blockers and staying with the man, then getting rid of the man that was coming down on them…

There was a clock that kept up with the time for every group work session, all of the workout periods, and group sessions were broken down into five minute segments….Every timer ran on a five-minute routine….There was also some smooth music playing in the background, and sounding a little bit like 97.1/WQMG….

A lot of Seven on Seven work going on today, at the Eastern Guilford Wildcats’ practice, and the 7 on 7 appears to be a regular staple of the EG Wildcat practices….Eastern also appears to have a very good corp group of quarterbacks and receivers….We saw a lot of the QB’s passing to the WR’s this afternoon…

The entire time I was out there with them today, which was around 45 minutes, the EG ‘Cats kept on working and practicing in that steady rainfall….There were no breaks from the rain, it just kept on falling and EG just kept on footballing…

Lots of last week of practice before the official first game teaching going on today…Some of the coaching was not first-time teaching, it was repeating and perfecting what the football players had already been taught….

This looks like it could be a good upcoming season for the EG Wildcats, and the key will be getting those young players coached up and taught up, and Eastern Guilford, led by head football coach Tony Aguilar, looks to have the leaders/coaches in place, to get the job done in 2021…

Five minute intervals, all day long, and EG should be ready to go on some five-minute runs on Friday night….
