New Pickleball Courts have opened at Bur-Mil Park

Guilford County Parks will officially opened new pickleball courts at Bur-Mil Park on Friday, August 13.

The department reconfigured a portion of the existing tennis courts into 10 permanent pickleball courts at the park at 5834 Bur-Mil Club Road, according to a news release.

Pickleball, which is a hybrid of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, is the fastest-growing sport in America, the county said.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the pickleball courts took place at 10 a.m. Friday. Following the ribbon cutting, Precision Golf & Tennis will offered a short pickleball demonstration.

The Family Tennis & Pickleball Center consists of three regulation tennis courts, four 8U junior tennis courts, and 10 permanent regulation pickleball courts. The pickleball facility includes two rows of five pickleball courts with seating on each end and a half-fence separating the rows.

“The great thing about pickleball is that it’s a sport for virtually anyone,” Todd Moore, Bur-Mil Park supervisor, said in the release. “We saw a big demand for pickleball during COVID and we figured it would be a great way to repurpose our older tennis courts into something more people could use”.

The courts are available to the general public at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis during regular park hours. The park is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, when not in use for scheduled programming.

The park hosted tournament play starting with the Precision Summer Slam on Aug. 14 and 15. Participants were guaranteed a minimum of four games and all skill levels were welcome.

Precision Instruction, in partnership with Carolina Tennis & Paddle, will provide free and paid programming, including learn to play clinics, leagues and tournaments for players looking to meet new players and improve their games.

Interested players can follow @burmilpickleball on Facebook or send an email to carolinatennisandpaddle@gmail.com for more information and updates. A schedule board will be posted at the courts with upcoming events and an online calendar will be available with scheduled activities.
