Got the high school story of the week yesterday, and was talking to former Grimsley Whirlie football player Phil Trollinger, and he was telling us about a game involving the Grimsley Whirlies and the Smith Golden Eagles, and this high school football game took place back in the late 60’s/early 1970’s…
They had just come out with the new full cage face masks for the football helmets, and in this Grimsley-Smith game, the defensive player from Grimsley was chasing the quarterback from Smith, and the Smith kid might have been Andy Wilson, or Andy Williams, but his name was Andy of all things..
Any way/any how, the Grimsley defender got to the Smith QB, and he took him down….
But, the Grimsley defender eventually went down too..The Grimsley defensive player came straggling over to the Grimsley bench after the play was over, and somehow, the Grimsley player was really walking wobbly, as he made it to the Grimsley sideline, and then the Grimsley defender just passed out…
Nobody knew what was wrong with the kid, but as he was coming to, the looked down at his hand, and he was bleeding…As they looked down at his hand closer, they noticed something was missing….The Grimsley defensive kid was missing a finger…His finger was gone, and now it was all about “The Finger”…..
The kid’s finger was GONE, and all of the players from both teams began looking all over the Smith football field, for that missing finger….It was nowhere to found…”The Finger” was GONE!!!!!
As they looked around, and “The Finger” was nowhere to be found, but in just a few moments later, a great and unusual discovery was made….Smith head coach Claude Manzi and his quarterback discovered “The Finger” stuck inside the Smith quarterback’s helmet, in fact it was caught in the facemask….Coach Manzi said the officials should penalize Grimsley, and the Grimsley defensive kid for face masking, since “The Finger” was caught/stuck inside the Smith player’s helmet..Manzi said the Grimsley kid was grabbing his kid’s helmet, when “The Finger” came off……
Well there was no penalty, but they had found “The Finger”, and it was time to try and reconnect it with the Grimsley player….The injured Grimsley player, the one who was missing “The Finger”, was sent to hospital…
And this is where this crazy story, reaches maybe the craziest point of all….
The injured Grimsley football player, the one who was missing “The Finger”, he had been sent to Moses Cone Hospital….And for some reason, after they found “The Finger”, they sent “The Finger” to Wesley Long Hospital..The kid missing “The Finger” went to Moses Cone Hospital, and “The Finger” ended up at Wesley Long Hospital….
Needless to say, they were not able to get “The Finger” back on the kid in time, and to this day, that former Grimsley football player is still walking around with a missing finger…
Like we were saying, ‘Give ‘Em The Finger’, but they really couldn’t, because the injured player ended up at one place(Moses Cone Hospital), and his finger, ended up at another place(Wesley Long Hospital)…
And there you go, one of our more interesting, and more entertaining football stories for this week….And it is all, true and just for you, here at GreensboroSports.com…..
