CHOUDRANT, La. – The High Point University men’s golf team completed the first tournament of the 2021-22 season on Tuesday (Sept. 14) with a 16th-place finish at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.

Graduate transfer Stuart Fuller was HPU’s top finisher at +3 for a share of 40th place. Fellow grad transfer Avery Price finished the event at five-over while redshirt sophomore Christian Castillo rode a team-best round of even-par with 18 pars in the final round to a +6 finish. Freshman Charlie Barr finished his collegiate debut at eight-over and redshirt junior Drew Weary came in at +25.

“Obviously not the way we want to start the season at all,” head coach Brady Gregor had to say after the tournament’s conclusion. “We have too much depth and talent on this team to shoot those scores. It’s on me to find the right five guys that are going to get the job done and that’s what I am going to do. Luckily, we have a quick turnaround and have the opportunity to showcase a better version of ourselves. The beauty of golf is you’re not always as far away from where you need to be as it seems sometimes.”

Fuller finished with a 74 with two birdies on the day, carding one and a pair of bogeys on each side. Price had an up-and-down final round, putting only seven pars on the card. He had a team-best four birdies on the day, but they were offset by seven bogeys. On the other hand, Castillo had as consistent of a day that a golfer can ask for, coming in at par on all 18 holes. That gave him a total of 42 pars in the tournament to lead the field. Barr couldn’t find his way into red numbers and matched Price’s seven bogeys for a 79 in round three while Weary shot an 86 on Tuesday.

High Point will look to put this tournament behind it with the Badger Invitational at the end of the month (Sept. 26-28) in Madison, Wis.
