FARMVILLE, Va. – The High Point University women’s soccer team defeated Longwood 5-2 on Wednesday night (Oct 20). Emily Mashinski and Juliette Vidal scored one each while Skyler Prillaman provided a hat trick in the win. The 5-2 win marked the third time this season that the Panthers have scored five goals in a game this season.
Brandi Fontaine: “This was a great performance tonight. I was extremely proud of the tone we set to start the game and the execution we had in the first half. We were a little flat to start the second half and credit Longwood for putting us on the back foot a little bit. We were able to settle down and finish the game strong. It was great to see Skyler Prillaman get a hat trick tonight as she has been working hard on getting the details in the final third.”
The Panthers had a few early chances to score early in the first half but they were opportunities the Lancers were able to neutralize as Mashinski recorded a shot in the 8th minute but it was wide.
HPU found the first goal of the contest in the 12th minute as Vidal sent a ball into the box for Prat that she played over to Mashinski who finished it in close to put HPU up 1-0. Mashinski has five goals on the season.
The Panthers drew a foul in the box in the 35th minute, Vidal took the PK and buried it for the second goal of the game.
In the last four minutes of the first half, Prillaman scored twice. Once off of a corner as in the 42nd minute, Prillaman nodded one in to put her Panthers up 3-0. Then with less than ten seconds to play in the first half Prillaman fired a rocket of a shot well beyond the box that came crashing into the net and dramatically put HPU up 4-0 at the half.
In the second half, Longwood added two goals but the Panthers were able to hold strong and protect the healthy lead that they built in the first half. HPU added the fifth goal late in the second half as Prillaman completed her hat trick in the 90th minute to give High Point a 5-0 win in Farmville.
The Panthers return to Vert Stadium for senior night as HPU hosts Hampton at 4:00 PM.
