HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University volleyball team dropped its first Big South match of the season on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 30) against the Campbell Camels in three straight sets. HPU’s program record 27 Big South game winning streak came to an end with the CU win.
Panther Particulars
The Panthers came out hot early starting with a kill from Gabby Idelbird to put HPU up 2-1.
Dylan Maberry made her presence known early as she kept the rally going and finished it with a kill.
Sydney Palazzolo kept the streak going with a kill to give the Panthers a 13-5 lead in the first set.
Campbell started to fight its way back into the first set, Jackie Joyce supplied a block that put her Panthers in front 18-13.
The camels stormed back to eventually tie the set at 20.
Campbell took the first set 21-25.
CU completed the comeback and took a 1-0 set advantage to start the match.
It was the first time in Big South play an opponent had taken the first set this season.
Maggie Salley came through with a big kill a kill that made it 9-7.
Campbell carried over the momentum from the first set into the second taking the lead early to remain in the driver’s seat at that point in the match. Campbell had a 15-10 lead in the second set at the media time-out.
A service ace from Madison Smith kept the Panther scoring streak alive at the end of the second set, however, the Camels were able to hold their lead to claim the second set 22-25.
HPU found themselves down 2-0 after two sets in Buies Creek. It was also the first time the Panthers had faced a two-set deficit in conference play this season.
Sopheea Mink got the offense started for the Panthers early in the third set with a kill.
Salley kept the offense rolling for the Panthers with another kill to cut the Camel lead to three points.
Mink put the Panthers in front in the third set to make it 9-8. CU then went on a 9-1 run to pull away in the third set.
A 4-0 run from HPU and it’s now 24-16 in the third set. Campbell had a 24-12 lead but a kill from Salley kept HPU alive. The 4-0 run caused a Camel timeout. Out of the Timeout, CU recorded the 25th point of the third set to give the Camels a 3-0 win over HPU.
Idlebird, Salley, and Maberry led the Purple & White in kills with nine each.
The Panthers’ historic Big South winning streak comes to an end at 27. The 27 game winning streak inside the Big South Conference is the second-longest in conference history behind Winthrop’s. The Panther streak spanned nearly two seasons.
