Game Report on Southwest Guilford-High Point Central Boys Basketball:Amarya Huggins helps SWG Cowboys lasso HPC Bison

Final score:Southwest Guilford 50, High Point Central 45

The Cowboys hit the road to open up the 2021-2022 regular season. These two teams squared off last year in what was a challenging season for most teams in the area. How would the new look Cowboys fare against the familiar city foe?

The Bison came into tonight’s contest having lost a tough battle to High Point Andrews while this was the Cowboys’ first game action on the season. Could the Cowboys shake off the rust or would the Bison be able to lasso in Southwest?

The opening frame was back and forth as both teams struggled to find any sort of rhythm or flow. The visiting squad managed just a handful more positive plays to hold a slim 13-8 lead at the close of the first stanza.

The second quarter had the hosting Bison play a sharper brand of ball and outplayed Southwest to cut the margin going into the break at 23-19 to end the discombobulated half.

The third frame was when the visitors finally seemed to show some glimpses of basketball acumen as the pressure and pace helped control the segment. The Cowboys converted turnovers into points at a much greater rate than the first half which allowed them to put the margin into double digits. Central would not quit nor let them run away with it as the frame ended with Southwest leading 38-28.

The final frame was an intense battle. Like a game of peekaboo with your toddler, the Cowboys’ intensity seemed to have vanished. The Bison came roaring back, taking advantage of miscues, and a lack of focus by Southwest. The Bison’s furious flurry tied the ball game with timely shooting at 45-45 with under a minute to play. The teams traded empty trips, and the Cowboys called a timeout. Out of the time out, the visitors managed to execute the play call and made a clutch corner three under 20 seconds to play. Some solid team defense and timely rebounds helped the visiting Cowboys to their first win of the season as they win 50-45.

High Point Central were led by Tre Hill with 12 points. The Cowboys were paced by Amarya Huggins with (17, 5 Rebs, 4 Asts), and Mason Drabik with (10, 2 Rebs). An all around team effort for the Cowboys to start the 2021-2022 campaign. The Cowboys will hit the road to face off a very good Mount Tabor team next Tuesday.
