Final:Mount Tabor 62, WS Reagan 54

Reagan - 14-10-9- 21 -- 54a
Mount Tabor - 16- 8-12-26 -- 62

Mount Tabor rallied late behind the play of Finley Simmons to defeat Reagan 62-54 on the Raiders’ home floor in Pfafftown Tuesday night. Simmons, who’s returning to form after a knee injury sidelined him for three weeks around the holiday break, scored nine of his 11 points in the final period to give the visiting Spartans their tenth win of the season.

The rivals traded small leads throughout much of the game’s first 30 minutes, but Simmons intercepted an inbounds pass and drove the length of the floor for a lay-in with 2:25 left to push the Spartans’ lead to five (53-48) and turn the momentum Mount Tabor’s direction. The winners stretched their lead to nine (62-53) in the final minute, their largest lead of the game, during a parade to the free throw line in the final period that yielded 16-25 for the Spartans, now 4-2 in Central Piedmont 4A Conference play.

Reagan scored ten straight over three minutes in the second quarter to lead by six (24-18) midway in the period. The Raiders, now 3-3 in CPC play, led by seven twice early in the third period but Mount Tabor scored 12 of the last 14 points over the final six minutes of the quarter to lead by three (36-33) entering the final period.

With the score tied at 46, Simmons hit a three-pointer from the left corner with three minutes remaining to put the Spartans in front for good as the winners made multiple trips to the line to expand their lead. Jalil Rogers hit a three with 27 seconds left to cut the Reagan deficit to six (59-53) but Mount Tabor ran out the clock to secure only it’s third win in the last seven games.

Rogers led all scorers with 22 points and added five rebounds. Reagan’s Cooper Jackson led all rebounders with ten. Freshman Snook Peterkin led the Spartans with 18 points and JP Peterkin added 12. Simmons added a team-high nine rebounds to his 12 points for Mount Tabor.

Reagan returns to the court Friday night at home for a CPC game against RJ Reynolds High School. Mount Tabor plays Winston-Salem Prep tomorrow night before returning to CPC play Friday against Parkland.
