RJ Reynolds endured a contentious second half to slip past Reagan on the Raiders’ home floor in Pfafftown Friday night. The Central Piedmont 4A Conference game was marred by seven technical fouls & two ejections and was close throughout.

Reagan led 11-7 late in the first quarter but was outscored 22-4 over the next seven minutes to yield their largest deficit of the night to the visitors at 29-15 with three minutes left in the first half. The Raiders, now 3-4 in CPC play, rallied to cut the RJR lead to eight (33-25) at the half.

Jalil Rogers, who led all scorers with a career-high 30 points, converted a three-point play with 3:21 left in the third period to cut the RJR lead to 37-34. But tempers flared & two double technicals were called on the Demons’ Trey Tisdale & Reagan’s Jack Leonard to push the game’s tone to a boil. Freshman guard KJ Ford hit a three to tie the game at 39 & two additional technicals on the Demons’ bench & on Kenaz McMilion sent the Raiders to the line for free throws that put them back in front 43-41 at the end of the third quarter.

But Reynolds started the final period strong with a steal & FG from Tawshawn Jeter & never trailed again. The Demons pushed their lead back to seven (53-46) with 3:50 remaining behind Eli Calhoun, who had eight of his team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter. Reagan never quit, chipping away with defensive pressure, cutting the lead to one (53-52) with 90 seconds left on a Rogers free throw. But Calhoun made two of four FTs down the stretch & the Raiders had three open possessions on a Cooper Jackson miss in the lane, a turnover by Ford & a missed three-pointer from Rogers to drop their second tight CPC home game of the week.

Reynolds enjoyed a decided advantage on the boards (43-31) including 18 offensive rebounds, nine in each half. The Demons also committed only eight turnovers against the Reagan pressure defense to hold on to the win.

The Raiders are scheduled to play at home against Western Guilford Monday at 2p, weather-permitting and return to CPc play next Friday at home against East Forsyth.
