Hokies defeat consecutive ranked opponents for the first time in program’s history 66-61
BLACKSBURG, VA –The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team held No. 23 North Carolina to just 32.8 percent shooting from the field on the way to a 66-61 win over the Tar Heels at home Sunday.
The Hokies (19-6, 11-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Georgia Amoore, who had 17 points and two steals. Elizabeth Kitley tacked on 15 points, eight rebounds, two steals and five blocks and Aisha Sheppard chipped in as well with 14 points.
The Virginia Tech offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in 11 threes on 28 attempts. Amoore was the most prolific shooter for the Hokies, draining five treys in the contest.
How It Happened
Virginia Tech struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-9 at the end of the first quarter.
Virginia Tech then cut the Tar Heels lead to 26-19 before going on a 12-0 run to take a 31-26 lead. The Tar Heels cut into that lead, but the Hokies still enjoyed a 31-28 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.
North Carolina then took a 35-34 lead following intermission before Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run to grab a 42-35 lead with 4:49 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Hokies added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 52-43 edge. Virginia Tech knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 21 total points.
Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Sheppard’s three, to grow the lead to 63-53 with 3:10 to go in the contest. The Tar Heels narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hokies still held on for the 66-61 win. Virginia Tech fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 14 points.
