Just a few hours after ESPN reported Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson could be facing charges from a second grand jury, Brazoria County district attorney Tom Selleck announced the case is closed.
“After a careful and thorough review of the facts and evidence documented in the reports prepared by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s and the Houston Police Department, as well as hearing testimony from witnesses the Grand Jury for Brazoria County has declined to charge Deshaun Watson with any crimes. The matter is closed,” Selleck’s statement reads, via KRPC 2 in Houston.
Watson, 26, sat out the entire 2021 NFL season after allegations surfaced of at least 22 instances of sexual misconduct. Earlier in March, a first grand jury in Harris County, Texas, declined to move forward with nine criminal charges against Watson.
The Browns acquired Watson in a blockbuster trade with the Houston Texans last week, dealing three first-round picks and more for the quarterback.
While two grand juries have now elected not to indict Watson, he’s still facing 22 civil lawsuits and a potential suspension from the NFL. Cleveland prepared for the latter by signing veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett last week.
Watson is a three-time Pro Bowler with 104 career touchdown passes and 36 interceptions.
