This really feels like high school football again…This is almost like bringing back on our, “High School Football Saturday Morning Rewind”…The ole Rewind has been here for a lot of posts over the years..
Today/this morning we visited with the Northern Guilford Nighthawks, out there on Spencer-Dixon Road…The Nighthawks got things going, with practice commencing at 6:30am this morning, and they were finishing up at around 9:30am, and that is about the time we arrived on the scene…
Got to talk to the Nighthawks’ head coach Erik Westberg, and we spoke/talked about key returning players/playmakers, such one of our state’s top-rated quarterbacks in Jack Mercer, and the All-State candidate at tight end, Vance Bolyard…There are many players from last year’s team that Northern will have to replace, but with upwards of 100 players-plus in camp, Coach Westberg feels like the new Northern players will step up, and fill the holes…
Great conversation with Coach Westberg today, and we get into a ton of topics dealing with the 2022 edition of the NG Nighthawks…We also got to take a look back at the past, as I asked Coach Westberg if the the Nighthawk program still carries a large piece of the Johnny Roscoe-influence with them, still today…
Coach Westberg said, “You know what, Coach Roscoe was just here this morning for practice, and he spoke with our players, and Coach Roscoe is still giving back, even today”…
We talk about the “Roscoe Era”, and other former players, and when I asked Coach Westberg about former defensive player Jack Gooch, off of last year’s team, it got me thinking about other Jacks from football over the years…Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, ‘Hacksaw’ Jack Reynolds, Jack Youngblood…Jack Gooch was a smiling red-headed kid, and a good kid at that…Lambert was missing his two front teeth, Jack Youngblood once played half of an NFL season with a broken leg…Football is a lifestyle, it is almost like a bloodline, whereas basketball is a game you play for your entire life, and baseball is a sport you learn as young child, and play on for awhile…
Football is a lifestyle and a you almost have to have it in your bloodline, or your DNA…There is something different about football, and it takes a different sort of person to make this sport click…
Coach Erik Westberg has found those type of young men at Northern Guilford High School, and he has a very good group of dedicated coaches backing him up, as his support staff…
