Western Guilford announces new Inductees into the Western Guilford High School Sports Hall of Fame

2022 New Inductees
Chuck Mobley
Patron of Athletics:served as the “Voice of WGHS” for 25 years, announcing baseball for 25
years and football and basketball for 12 years. His goal was to create an upbeat
atmosphere while ensuring coaches, players and fans enjoyed their experience at every
game.

As a 1970 graduate of Western Guilford, Chuck was a four-time letterman in football and
was chosen as a captain for his senior year · He was a three-time letterman in baseball and
played basketball for two years · Chuck served in numerous clubs at Western Guilford and
was voted Class President for three years · As a senior, Chuck was voted Mr. Western
Guilford

He is married to Debbie Wyrick Mobley, a 1969 graduate of Western Guilford. They
have three children: Kristi, Brian, and Kevin; all of whom also graduated from Western
Guilford.

Chuck proudly served in the N.C. Army National Guard for six years and retired from the
Internal Revenue Service as a Senior Manager after 36 years of government service where
he was awarded the Albert Gallatin Award for distinguished civil service by the United
States Department of Treasury. He has served his church in many positions including
church administrator, treasurer, and deacon.

Chuck coached numerous men’s softball and basketball teams, youth baseball and AAU
boys’ basketball for many years. He loves all sports, plays golf and is an avid UNC Tar
Heel and Dallas Cowboys fan.

DePaul Mittman
Coach
DePaul Mittman coached Track and Field for 30 years and served as the Women’s Track
and Field Head Coach at Western Guilford for 23 years. In addition to coaching Track
and Field, he also coached football and basketball. He coached football for 23 years, 18
years at Western Guilford, serving as Defensive Coordinator from 1999 through 2003.
At Western Guilford, Coach Mittman achieved an outstanding overall record in Women’s
Track and Field of 296 wins, 60 losses, and 2 ties in his 23-year career as head coach of
the Lady Hornets, a career winning percentage of 83% · The class of 2000 achieved a dual
and tri-meet record of 55 wins and 0 losses, and the class of 2007 achieved a record of 57
wins and only 1 loss.

During Coach Mittman’s tenure as head coach, his teams won 15 Conference
Championships, 8 Regional Championships, 2 Regional Runner-ups, 2 State Runner-ups,
and in 1999, he guided the Western Guilford Women’s Track Team to the NCHSAA State
Championship.

Coach Mittman was named Conference Coach of the Year 16 times during his 23-year
tenure · He was named Guilford County Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2000 · In 1999,
Coach Mittman was named the NCHSAA Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year ·

During his time as Head Coach at Western Guilford, Coach Mittman’s program produced
64 All-State Athletes, 16 NCHSAA State Champions, and 3 All-Americans

In 2001, DePaul Mittman co-founded the N.C. Track and Cross-Country Coaches
Association and served as its first President · He served as the Executive Director of the
Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association from 2005 to 2022 · Coach Mittman
served as the NCHSAA Indoor and Outdoor State Meet Director from 1999 to 2022 ·

Coach Mittman was inducted into the North Carolina High School Track & Field Hall of
Fame and the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.

Coached by N.C. Soccer Hall of Fame member, the late George Kennedy, the 1992 Western Guilford Men’s Soccer Team defeated
T.C. Roberson by a score of 2 to 1 to capture the 1992 NCHSAA 3A Men’s State Soccer Championship. On the way to Western
Guilford’s first State Championship in Soccer, the team earned the Mid-State 3A Conference Championship with an undefeated
conference record, including a 20-game winning streak to end the season.

Lee Schuler
Class of 1976
Lee Shuler is a three-time letterman in Track and Field at Western Guilford, lettering in
1974, 1975, and 1976. Lee was also a member of the basketball team (1976) and cross country team (1976).

In 1976, Lee set a Western Guilford School record in the High Jump of 6’9” · and was
named Track and Field MVP. Also in 1976, Lee won the NCHSAA State High Jump
Championship with a jump of 6’8 ½” and was named Western Guilford Track & Field
MVP

Lee accepted a full scholarship to high jump for the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill following his graduation from Western Guilford. Lee was a four-year letter
winner at UNC, 1977 through 1980. As a Tarheel, Lee won the Atlantic Coast
Conference Indoor High Jump Championship in 1978 and 1980 and the Outdoor High
Jump Championship in 1979 and 1980. In 1978, Lee set an ACC Indoor High Jump
record of 7’2 ¼” and in 1980, set a UNC School and Stadium record of 7’ 2 ½”. In
1980, he was also named UNC Track and Field MVP-Field Events.

Lee participated in the NCAA Track and Field Championships in 1978, 1979, and 1980.
In 1980, Lee’s career in the high jump culminated with an invitation to compete in the
U.S. Olympic Trials

Jennifer Lanier
Class of 1977
Jennifer Lanier is a 9-time letter winner at Western Guilford in Volleyball (3),
Basketball (3), and Women’s Track and Field (3)

Track and Field: 3-time letter winner · Set the WG School Record in the Long Jump of
18’8” in 1977 · Set the WG School Record for the 880-yard Relay of 1:44.50 in 1977 ·
Set the WG School Record for the Mile Relay of 3:58.90 in 1977

She was a 3-time All-Conference selection and a 3-time NCHSAA All-State selection in
Track and Field in 1977: Long Jump, Mile Relay and 880-yard Relay.

In the 1977 NCHSAA State Track and Field Championships, Jennifer won a 2nd place
finish in the Long Jump, a 2nd place finish in the Mile Relay, and a 4th place finish in the
880-yard Relay. Jennifer’s outstanding performance led Western Guilford to win the
1977 NCHSAA State Women’s Track and Field Championship, Western Guilford’s first
ever State Championship in any sport. What made this championship even more
significant was that in 1977, the State Track and Field Championship was not divided
into divisions. This accomplishment was even more meaningful for Jennifer and her
team as this was a unified State Championship with all Divisions: IA, 2A, 3A, and 4A
competing together to crown a single State Champion.

In 1977, Jennifer Lanier was named Western Guilford High School’s Most Outstanding
Female Athlete.

Weslan Hunter
Class of 1997
Weslan Hunter is a 9-time letter winner at Western Guilford in Football (4), Track and
Field (3), and Men’s Basketball (2).

Weslan was a member of 4 Conference Championships in Football (1993, 1994, 1995,
1996) while at Western Guilford · Tied a long-standing Western Guilford school record
for most interceptions in a single season with 7 and tied another long-standing Western
Guilford school record for most interceptions in a single game with 3 · 11 career
interceptions at WG · Team Captain in 1996 · Named All-Conference in 1994, 1995, and
1996 · Named All State in 1995 and 1996

In Track and Field, Weslan was a two-time All-Conference selection in the 300-meter
Hurdles (1996 and 1997), and a member of the NCHSAA State Champion 400-meter
Relay team (1997)

After graduating from Western Guilford, Weslan accepted a scholarship to play football
at Appalachian State University, where he was a 3-year starter at Linebacker · He was a
two-time All-Southern Conference selection on defense · Weslan scored 4 defensive
touchdowns for the Mountaineers while at Appalachian State.

Weslan served his country honorably in the U.S. Army where he completed 5 military
tours, 2 of which were in a combat role.

Weslan received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2006
and received his MBA from Grand Canyon State University in 2015.

Geneva Yarborough
Class of 2002
Geneva Danielle Yarborough lettered 10 times as a student-athlete at Western
Guilford: Basketball (4), Track and Field (4), Volleyball (2)

Volleyball: Lettered · Played Varsity Volleyball for 2 years and was named Team
Captain in 2002
