UNCG Men’s Basketball Outlasts Elon, 65-61

ELON, N.C. – Mikeal Brown-Jones scored a career-high 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting as the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team earned a Saturday afternoon victory over Elon, 65-61.

The victory over the Phoenix marks the fourth consecutive victory over Elon, dating back to the 2017-18 season.

Both sides traded the lead five times in the first five minutes of the first half with the Spartans holding a one-point lead, 7-6, five minutes into the contest. The layup at the 15:13 mark from Kobe Langley(Southwest Guilford HS) sparked a 13-0 run that lasted the next 4:07 as the Spartans exploded for a 12-point lead, 18-6. UNCG’s lead briefly dipped to eight with 9:40 remaining in the first half, but the Spartans reclaimed a ten-point lead 20 seconds later thanks to a layup from Brown-Jones.

The Spartans reclaimed a double-digit lead at the 3:24 mark after briefly ceding the double-digit advantage as Jalen Breath collected his own rebound and made the putback layup. Elon responded with an 8-2 run over the next 2:04 to shrink the Spartans lead to five, 28-23. UNCG posted a 5-0 run to close the final 1:06 thanks to a three-point field goal from Keyshaun Langley(Southwest Guilford HS) and a layup from Joryam Saizonou that sent the Spartans into halftime with a 33-23 edge.

Both sides traded field goals for the first 4:30 of the second half until the Phoenix scored back-to-back field goals 48 seconds apart to cut the Spartans’ lead to five, 37-32. Elon cut the lead down to four, 41-37, with 12:29 left in the second half. Brown-Jones posted five-straight points in response to boost the UNCG lead, 49-40, with 10:44 remaining. A Mohammed Abdulsalam layup at the 8:58 mark capped a 7-0 run to bring the Spartans’ lead back to 11.

Elon posted a 9-0 run in response beginning at the 8:28 mark and lasting the next 2:58 of the period, shrinking the UNCG lead down to two, 51-49. Saizonou broke the run with a three-point field goal with 5:30 remaining to reclaim a five-point edge. Dante Treacy expanded the lead to six, 57-51, with 4:28 remaining with a fast break layup. Elon cut the lead down to one possession when Elon made one of two free throws to cut the lead down to one, 59-58, with 1:02 remaining. With 35 seconds remaining, Keyshaun Langley made a three-pointer to bring the lead back to four. UNCG made free throws in the final seconds to support the lead and earn the win.


· Brown-Jones added five rebounds in 30 minutes played.

· Keyshaun Langley(Southwest Guilford HS) posted 15 points, shooting 4-for-11 from three-point range, while adding three steals.

· Kobe Langley(Southwest Guilford HS) posted six points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

· UNCG posted a 43.5 field goal percentage including 48.4 percent shooting in the first half.

· The Spartans held Elon to 33.3 percent shooting in the second half.

· UNCG posted a 38-34 rebounding advantage with a 10-5 edge on the offensive glass.

· The Spartans kept their turnover count to ten, five fewer turnovers than the Phoenix,

· UNCG held a 15-10 advantage in points off turnovers.

Elon: 1-8


The Spartans conclude a three-game road trip Tuesday with a trip to Arkansas to face the Southeastern Conference’s Razorbacks at 7 p.m.
