UNCG Women’s Basketball Drops Game to South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball’s Faith Price and Khalis Cain led the team with 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the Spartans’ 64-53 loss to South Carolina State Monday night at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The two teams traded baskets until 3:53 was left in the first quarter with the score tied at seven. An 11-6 run in favor of the Spartans concluded the frame for a five-point advantage, 18-13. The run included Price’s second three-pointer of the game.

South Carolina State tied the game at 18 for the third knotted score of the contest at 8:30 in the second quarter. The Lady Bulldogs took their first lead of the game with 7:03 left in the half. The score toggled as Antoniette Emma-Nnopu put up a second-chance basket to take the lead back, 27-26. Then, UNCG closed the half with back-to-back made free throws from Price, 29-26.

South Carolina State went on a 13-0 run to start the third quarter to hold a 39-29 advantage. Jordan Releford’s layup stopped the streak. The Spartans fought back with an 8-3 run, to cut the deficit to five, 42-37. South Carolina State scored four points before the buzzer for a nine-point lead, 46-37.

The Lady Bulldogs saw their largest advantage of the game with 2:07 remaining in the game, as they held a 15-point lead, 62-47. UNCG scored six-straight points to cut the deficit to nine, 62-53, but South Carolina State made two free throws for the 11-point win, 64-53.

· Cain tallied her fourth-career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

· Isys Grady registered seven rebounds.

· Nia Howard had eight points, while Emma-Nnopu registered seven points.

· Price and Grady had two steals each.

· Nitzan Amar notched six assists.

· South Carolina State scored 23 points off of turnovers, to UNCG’s nine.

· Both teams had 34 points in the paint.
