Four Spartans Score Double Figures to Soar Past Western Carolina, 83-59

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Four from the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women’s basketball team scored in double figures, as the Spartans beat Western Carolina University, 83-59 on Thursday evening, at the Ramsey Center in Southern Conference (SoCon) play.

Khalis Cain had a team high in both points, 15 and rebounds, 12. Isys Grady also contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Faith Price (12 points) and Akira Wiggins (14 points) were the other two Spartans that scored in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG started the first quarter by keeping Western Carolina off the board for four minutes, 45 seconds, until Kehinde Obasuyi made a free throw, 10-1. Cain led the Spartans with six points in the frame. UNCG came in with strong defense only allowing seven points in the first quarter ending the quarter with the best scoring run of the game at 5:07.

Wiggins scored the first basket of the second quarter with one outside the paint. The Catamounts went scoreless for just about two minutes before Zanoria Cruzz made a free throw, 26-8. The Spartans continued to build on their lead, eventually expanding the gap to 24, its largest of the half, 43-19. Price and Grady both had six points in the second frame.

Nia Howard made a layup in the paint in transition within the first 30 seconds of the third quarter. Western Carolina’s Mya Love comeback with a field goal in the paint as well. The Catamounts went on a mini scoring run of six points for a 20-point deficit, 45-25. Wiggins had eight points in the third quarter to lead the Spartans, but the Catamounts were able to chop away to a 15-point deficit, 56-41.

The Catamounts’ Kyla Allison made a jumper in the first 15 seconds of the fourth quarter. The Spartans came back strong with a 10-4 run leading to a 21-point advantage, 66-45. The Spartans ended the quarter with a 10-point run, while the Catamounts went scoreless in the last two minutes, 10 seconds.

BY THE NUMBERS
UNCG held the lead for the entire game.
UNCG had 36 points in the paint compared to Western Carolina’s 28.
Cain had 15 points to lead the Spartans.
This is Cain’s fourth double-double of the season, 12th of her career.
Price had two steals. and two blocks.
Grady recorded the seventh double-double of her career.
Wiggins led the game in assists with eight.
Grady also had two steals.
