UNCG Men’s Basketball Extends Streak to Five Behind 62-50 Win Over VMI

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men’s basketball team took on a large task, as it won its fifth-straight game with a 62-50 victory over VMI on Wednesday night in Southern Conference (SoCon) play at the Greensboro Coliseum.

With the win and Furman defeating Samford on the same night, the Bulldogs and Spartans are now tied for first with an 8-1 SoCon mark.

The 8-1 record in SoCon play continues to match the Spartans’ conference start during the 2018-19 season. This was the ninth win of the season by double figures. It was the 11th win in 14 games played, dating back to December 3, 2022 with a non-conference 65-61 win over Elon.

This is the first five-game win streak for Head Coach Mike Jones’ during his two years with UNCG. It is also the longest win streak for the Spartans since the 2020-21 season, when UNCG won seven straight.

Senior Keyshaun Langley(Southwest Guilford High School) reached the 1,000-point career milestone after scoring 14 points. He now has 1,010 career points. Keyshaun is the second from UNCG this season to reach 1,000 career points. Keondre Kennedy was the first.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG rolled with the advantage through the entire first half. Dante Treacy began the game with a three pointer less than three minutes into the game for the first bucket of the contest. The Spartans’ 18-point lead with 2:17 remaining in the frame, was the largest of the game following a 12-0 run, where the Keydets were scoreless for six minutes, 39 seconds. UNCG held a 28-16 advantage at the end of the half, for its 18th game this season with the lead at halftime.

The two teams traded baskets for the first three minutes of the second half with VMI coming within six at 17:19 on a three pointer from Tony Felder off a fast break. The Keydets’ went on a 14-10 run to cut the deficit to two, 40-42. Four of the Keydets’ six three pointers came in the second half. UNCG extended its lead back to double figures, 10 points, with an 11-5 run and a 55-44 advantage. The Spartans’ offense kept VMI out of reach, closing the game with a 12-point victory, 62-50.

Leyte led the game with nine rebounds, while Keyshaun and Kobe Langley(Southwest Guilford HS) had five boards each.
Kobe had a game-high four steals, while Keyshaun tallied three.
UNCG outscored VMI with 19 points off turnovers, compared to two.
The Spartans also had 18 bench points, while the Keydets had four.
