Offense Leads UNCG Softball to Wins over Morehead State & UNCW

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team is on a four-game win streak at home following a 7-2 win over Morehead State and a 9-1 five-inning victory over UNC Wilmington on Sunday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

The run-rule win against the Seahawks was the Spartans’ fourth shortened game of the season.

UNCG is now 7-3 on the season.

Game 1: UNCG 7 – Morehead State 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Eagles scored first on an error in the top of the first for a 1-0 advantage. The Spartans responded with their own run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI ground out from Jorde Chartrand.

UNCG split five runs between the fourth and fifth innings on five total hits. With runners on second and third, Brooklynn Maxwell’s two-run double gave the Spartans their first lead, 3-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Maycin Brown’s fourth homer of the season was a three-run blast to right field extending the lead to five, 6-1.

Delaney Cumbie’s solo blast with two outs in the bottom of the sixth gave UNCG a 7-1 lead. For one last try at scoring, Morehead State’s Ilencia Lightbody crossed home on Taikibrea Campbell’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to five, 7-2, before Salem Ward struck out her sixth batter of the game and Reese Byrd came in for relief, striking out the final batter.

NOTES
Cumbie’s homer was the second of the season.
Ward tossed 6.2 innings, striking out a season-high six batters in her first-collegiate win.
She allowed just four hits and two runs with no earned runs.
Maxwell went 2-for-4 with one run scored, two RBI, and a double.
Brown swung 2-for-2 at the plate with 3 RBI, two runs scored, and a home run.

Game 2: UNCG 9 – UNCW 1 (5 inn.)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In the circle, UNCG’s Maddie Spell earned her second win of the season tossing 5.0 innings, giving up just four hits and one run with no earned runs. She struck out two batters.

The Seahawks scored their lone run in the top of the first. The Spartans threatened in the bottom of the frame, but UNCW left the bases loaded, as Emily Winstead retired the side with one of two of her strikeouts in the game.

UNCG scored four runs in the second and third innings on a combined seventh hits. Maxwell’s fourth double of the season scored the Spartans’ first two runs for a 2-1 advantage and Cumbie’s third homer of the season added two more runs, 4-1.

The Spartans strung together four-straight hits in the third inning, where Brown’s fifth home run of the season, Jessie Shipley’s first double of the season, and a RBI single from Samantha Lagrama extended the lead to seven, 8-1.

After Grace Loftin reached base on an error, Brown connected for her first-double of the season down the left field line, scoring Loftin for a 9-1 lead.

NOTES
Brown was the only Spartan with two hits, swinging 2-for-3.
Cumbie and Maxwell each had two RBI.
Lagrama went 1-for-3 with one RBI
Shipley went 1-for-2 with one RBI and 2 runs scored.

The Spartans continue a 13-game home stand, hosting Campbell on Wednesday, February 22 for a single game at the UNCG Softball Stadium with a first pitch slated for 5 p.m.
