UNCG Baseball Falls to No. 4 Wake Forest in First Mid-Week Matchup

Greensboro, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell to No. 4 Wake Forest in its first mid-week game on Tuesday February 21. The Demon Deacons are the first ACC opponent of the season for the Spartans.

Junior Matt Kemp tossed 1.2 innings for the Spartans, giving up two hits, and one run but striking out a career-best three batters.

Freshman Jay Miller had his first-collegiate start on the mound, while classmate Chris Gruskin made his first-collegiate appearance. Sophomore Wesley Buck and junior Ryan Rouse had their first appearances of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Wake Forest started the game off with eight runs in the top of the first inning, including an in-the-park home run from Tommy Hawke, scoring three runs.

The Spartans didn’t give up with Dallas Callahan and Grant Aycock on base. Daniel Cerda hit a single to center field allowing Callahan to score in the bottom of the third, 11-1.

Zack Budzik crossed home plate with Caleb Cozart’s RBI single to center field in the bottom of the sixth, 15-2.

The Demon Deacons added five more runs before the game concluded for a 20-2 victory.

On Deck
The Spartans will host the Fighting Irish for a three-game series, February 24 through February 26, slated for 4 p.m., 2 p.m., and 1 p.m., in respective order.

All regular season home games are free of charge.

Following the series, UNCG has its first road game visiting Elon on February 28, with a first pitch of 4 p.m.
