The Smith boys and girls have found a way to Survive and Advance, and they will be carrying the Guilford County Banner into the Regionals next week….Got to feeling good right now for those folks over in South Greensboro, off of South Holden Road, and right in that area, near Ben L. Smith High School…..

Smith at Hickory boys still in progress, but we had what would be considered overall, a tough day at basketball courts, for our Guilford County area teams…From Guilford County, we saw big wins from the Smith girls, and from the Greensboro Day School boys, but we lost the Northern Guilford girls, the High Point Andrews girls, the Grimsley boys, the Southern Guilford boys, and like we were saying, we are still waiting for the word on the Smith boys…Big time CONGRATS to the Greensboro Day School boys, they are State Champions again, for their head coach Freddy Johnson, and Mike Bolton’s Smith girls are making believers out of those that follow girls and boys basketball, in Guilford County…

NG Scoring:Malena Delisa 15 points, Laurel Zlotkowski 10, Jasmine Harris 9, Jadyn Newsome 9, Skylar Fowler 4, Lizzie Gram 4, Christina Delisa 1
Tough way for Northern head coach Kim Furlough go out, but she has earned her retirement from coaching, and she won many big games over the years, on what in the future should be named, in her honor, The Kim Furlough Court, at Northern Guilford High School…They may want to go with the Kim Furlough Gymnasium some day, but the Kim Furlough Court does have a nice ring to it, and it was a bit bittersweet, to see Coach Furlough walking away with her Nighthawks, at the end of the evening, on Saturday February 25, 2023….The only coach the NG Nighthawks girls basketball team has ever known/had, Kim Furlough…

But got to also say, that was a very tough Catholic team, that took out the Nighthawks tonight…Blanca Thomas, in the middle for the Cougars, sort of gives you a glimpse of a latter-day Elissa Cunane, who used to man the middle, for Northern Guilford…A very tough zone defense employed by Catholic in the second half, and in the first half, Kate McArdle made Jasmine Harris’ life, a living nightmare, as Jasmine could only get off one shot, and that one didn’t go…

Harris recovered to post nine big second half points, where she had two three’s and a three-point play, where she drove to the basket with a behind-the-back dribble, put up the shot and made the bucket, and she got fouled, and then made the free throw for the three point play…

Malena Delisa was able to keep NG in the game, in the first half, and she will continue to be a solid contributor for the ‘Hawks next season…Thirteen points in the first half for Northern’s Malena Delisa…

Catholic had those big and important nights from Thomas on offense, and from McArdle on defense, and they also got 15 points from guard Aniya Scales…Scales hit the scales hard, and she connected for two 3’s for CC…Catholic saw themselves get into some foul trouble, and they played through it, and now they will stay on the road, and play at Watauga, next Tuesday night….

Congrats to out-going Northern Guilford seniors, under head coach Kim Furlough; as Christina Delisa, Jadyn Newsome, Laurel Zlotkowski, Lizzie Gram, Caroline Gram, Avery Burnham, and Skylar Fowler, all close out their high school basketball careers…
