Callahan Hits Home Run in Loss to Notre Dame, 6-5

GREENSBORO, N.C.– The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell to ACC foe Notre Dame 6-5 in a tight battle on Friday evening at UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Dallas Callahan hit the first home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to bring in G.C. Jarman and Mitchell Smith.

Kennedy Jones went 3-for-5, leading the Spartans in hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Fighting Irish started the game by scoring four runs on two hits in the top first.

The Spartans tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with four runs of their own. With the bases loaded and one out, Rowan Watt hit a ball to center field scoring Zack Budzik on a sacrifice fly for the first run. On a 0-2 count, Callahan crushed a long ball over the right center fence for his first homer of the season, scoring Jarman and Smith.

In a last chance effort, Notre Dame’s Danny Neri connected for his own home run down the left field line driving in Carter Putz for a two-run advantage, 6-4. In relief, Matt Kemp retired the side with a strikeout and a ground out, leaving two on base in the top of the ninth.

The Spartans had one more chance to come back in the bottom of the ninth and with two outs Jones singled up the middle moving Jeremy Wolf over to third. Budzik then doubled down the left field cutting the deficit to one, 6-5. The Fighting Irish got out of the jam with a final strikeout to hold on for the win.
