Baseball Dominates Elon In 10-5 Win

ELON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team had an electric six-run ninth inning to dominate in-state rival Elon, 10-5, Tuesday night at Latham Park.

Mitchell Smith, Dosi Jonas, and Daniel Cerda each had a home run, while four Spartans had a multi-hit game. This was the fourth game this season that UNCG has totaled 10 or more hits, tallying 12 against the Phoenix. It is also the second game this season with three home runs, the last was against Notre Dame on February 25.

How It Happened
The Spartans came out on top scoring two runs in the first inning. Matt Smith doubled down the left field line for Daniel Cerda to score and Dosi Jonas followed with a RBI ground out allowing Kennedy Jones to score.

After two scoreless innings, Elon took the advantage, 3-2, with three runs in the bottom of the third, off a RBI single to center field and a RBI double.

The Spartans countered with a RBI double from Jonas in the top of fifth and a RBI double from Caleb Cozart in the top of the sixth, 4-3.

Elon took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on Connor Offshack’s solo homer and a RBI walk.

Four of UNCG’s 12 hits came in the ninth inning, where three of the four were home runs. The final run came on a fielding error for a 10-5 win. The Spartans were able to fend Elon off, stranding one on base in the bottom of the ninth to hold on for the victory.

UNCG will host Elon for the second game of the series tomorrow, Wednesday March 1st with a first pitch of 4 p.m. Tomorrow and all weekday games (Monday-Thursday) are Bark in the Park games, sponsored by All Pets Considered.

Following the series with the Phoenix the Spartans host Rutgers for a three-game series this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (March 3-5). Friday’s first pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
