Pride falls to Birmingham-Southern but bounces back with win over Lynchburg

Raleigh, NC – The Greensboro College Softball team finished this weekend’s Grand Slam Triangle Classic going 3-1 overall with two wins on Saturday and a win and a loss on Sunday. To begin the final day, they fell to a tough Nationally ranked Birmingham-Southern team but bounced back to beat a talented ODAC member University of Lynchburg. Head Coach Meredith Mills was very pleased with her team’s effort as they moved to 6-2 on the season.

Game 1

The Panthers would score three runs in the first five innings, but in the sixth inning, Senior Kassie Simmons (Gibonsville, NC) drove in Junior Ivy Ray (Thomasville, NC) for the team’s first run of the game. Unfortunately. that is all the offensive the Pride would get as BSC scored another run in the seventh inning to defeat Greensboro by a final score of 4-1.

Sophomore Kelsey Craven (Ramseur, NC) finished the game 2-3, while Ray, Simmons and Sophomore M’Kenzie Davis (Greensboro, NC) each added a hit.

Game 2

In the top of the first, the Hornets would grab a one run lead, but the Pride answered with a two-run home run to left center field by Craven to take the lead, 2-1. In the second and third innings, the Greensboro bats would come alive, driving in 10 runs behind RBI’s from Ray, Junior Alexis Sox (Burlington, NC), Sophomore Madison Dillner (Leicester, NC), Senior Kailey Walker (Eden, NC), Davis, Junior Faith Made (Rural Hall, NC) and Simmons, who hit a three-run homerun. With the scoring production, the Pride was able to come away with the win, 12-4.

Greensboro was led by Simmons who finished 1-2 with a homerun and 3 RBI’s, while Craven added a homerun of her own to go along with 2 RBI’s. On the mound, Junior Lauren Engel (Hunterville, NC) pitched the entire game, earning her fourth win of the season.

The Pride will return to action on Wednesday, March 8th and Thursday March 9th as they travel to Myrtle Beach, SC to participate in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. They will open with Penn State-Harrisburg and first pitch is scheduled for 9:00am.
